Matt Maiocco reports for the Press Democrat San Francisco 49ers DT Reggie McGrew is the top candidate to be the primary backup at defensive tackle for the team. He finds himself behind Dana Stubblefield and Bryant Young on the team's depth chart. He's expected to see maybe 20 to 25 snaps a game. Coach Steve Mariucci said McGrew is still competing for a job. His toughest competition might come from undrafted rookie John Schlecht of Minnesota.

In addition to the previously reported PR David Allen, the team's official site reports San Francisco 49ers coach Steve Mariucci was impressed with the following undrafted free agents at mini-camp: WR Grant Heard (Mississippi), TE Ben Steele (Mesa St.), S Al Blades (Miami) and defensive DT John Schlecht (Minnesota). San Francisco has historically done a great job finding undrafted players who ultimately make an impact.

According to the team's official site, the San Francisco 49ers have officially signed eight undrafted free agents. The team is expecting to sign between 25-and-30 undrafted players who will hope to make the team. Those signed today are: S Al Blades of Miami, P Stephen Cheek of Humboldt St., DT Paul Mandina of Indiana, RB Jared MacGrath of Vanderbilt, S Ronald Ockimey of San Jose St., DT John Schlecht of Minnesota, LB Quincy Stewart of Louisiana Tech and K Keith Stokes of East Carolina.
