Rumph can play both cornerback and safety, giving the team options if anyone on the depth chart gets injured. Roger Phillips, of the Oakland Tribune, reports San Francisco 49ers CB Mike Rumph missed four tackle Friday, Aug. 11, against the Chicago Bears. Rumph was already working with the No. 2 defense during training camp. Head coach Mike Nolan said, "It's one thing when you miss a tackle and it's just you and the ball carrier. But he had an opportunity to use the sideline on a couple of them. I can't say why (Rumph struggled)." When asked where Rumph stood in his bid for a spot on the roster, Nolan said, "We'll let it play out as we go forward. It's a little early to make our decisions - our final decisions, anyhow. But each day we reevaluate everybody. Hopefully he bounces back (next Sunday) against Oakland and has a good game."

"I already feel comfortable so I know I'm lying to myself because there is a lot more to learn about the position that I don't know," Rumph said. Rumph would replace S Ronnie Heard, who left for Atlanta as a free agent. ''I'm encouraged by what I've seen, but when you get the pads on we'll know for sure,'' head coach Mike Nolan said after practice Tuesday, June 7. He had met with Rumph twice in recent weeks to discuss the job switch, which Nolan suggested should give him a better chance to fill the secondary with his top four pass defenders. Rumph said it wouldn't take him long to adjust to safety.

49ers.com reports the San Francisco 49ers CB Mike Rumph (arm) returned to practice Tuesday, May 31. "Mike practiced today which was a very good sign," head coach Mike Nolan said. "He did well out there running around. His legs have always been good. He went diving for a couple of balls that I didn't care for; he's supposed to stay off the ground." There has been previous speculation Rumph might be moved to free safety. Nolan has stated that his goal is to get the best possible players on the field at the same time and if moving Rumph to safety accomplishes that goal, then he will make the move.

Doctors are supposed to look at his injured arm the 27th of this month, but he is looking to return sooner, as in next week. "I'm anxious to get back out there. I'm trying to come back next week, so I might call him (doctor) up and push for it," Rumph said. "I understand why they want to be safe, but I do feel like my arm is much better, much stronger." It appears, at this time, the team is going to keep Rumph at cornerback and not move him to safety. He said head coach Mike Nolan asked him to consider moving to safety. Rumph said he's paying attention to both positions and that he will "do whatever it takes for us to win."
