NFL | League reaches agreement with Lynch

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports former NFL C Ben Lynch and the league have reached a tentative agreement to settle Lynch's lawsuit out of court. His lawsuit was against the NFL's retirement and disability plans because he believed he should have been getting more benefits since his diabilities were caused by an "active football" injury. No details of the settlement have been disclosed.

NFL | Lynch suing league's disability plan

Jeff Barker, of the Baltimore Sun, reports lawyer Cy Smith has filed a lawsuit on behalf of former NFL C Ben Lynch against the NFL's retirement and disability plan. The suit says Lynch was denied benefits because his disabilities were not a result of a "active" football injury. However, Lynch claims his disabilities occurred from an on-field injury.

Joseph Duarte, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans OL Ben Lynch (knee) suffered a season-ending knee injury in Saturday's, Aug. 23, game against the San Diego Chargers. Lynch had been fighting for a roster spot as a reserve.

HoustonTexans.com reports the Houston Texans have brought in OL Ben Lynch to training camp. "Right now I am trying to take in everything that is being thrown at me," Lynch said. "It is a lot of stuff to take in in one day. I have to make sure I get my play book and catch up with the rest of the guys." Lynch, who played for the San Francisco 49ers last season, was brought in to "beef up" the Texans offensive line.

As an update to previous reports, SF49ers.com reports X-rays revealed a fracture in the right ring finger of San Francisco 49ers C Jeremy Newberry (finger). He will not play in the teamís preseason game this weekend. Ben Lynch will start in his place.

RB Garrison Hearst, FB Fred Beasley, C Jeremy Newberry and S Lance Schulters -- all starters -- are all able to depart. QB Rick Mirer, OT Matt Willig, LB Terry Killens, DE Troy Wilson and CB Tyrone Drakeford are also unrestricted free agents. DE Chike Okeafor, FB Terry Jackson and C Ben Lynch are restricted free agents. DT Reggie McGrew (ankle) is continuing to make progress.

Matt Maiocco reports for the Press Democrat San Francisco 49ers backup C Ben Lynch, who has been out of action since sustaining a high right ankle sprain Oct. 7, is expected to begin practicing this week. Coach Steve Mariucci said he expects Lynch will not return to the playing field until November 18 against the Carolina Panthers.

Mike Triplett, of the Sacramento Bee, reports for the Sporting News, that San Francisco 49ers TE Greg Clark (hamstring) is slowly returning to practice. The 49ers plan to bring him along slowly in limited work hoping he can make a full recovery from three surgeries on his right hamstring. C Ben Lynch (ankle) is about a week away from returning to practice after sustaining an ankle sprain.

"It could be a couple of weeks," Mariucci said. CB Jason Webster (concussion) is expected to practice Wednesday. Mariucci said return specialist Vinny Sutherland (groin) is questionable for Sunday's game. Backup center Ben Lynch (high ankle sprain) is OUT.

The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers RB Jonas Lewis might be out for the year after re-injuring a groin muscle during practice last week. He was walking with a cane on Monday. Backup C Ben Lynch (ankle) and backup DT Reggie McGrew (ankle) both could be out for several more weeks. TE Greg Clark (hamstrings) doesn't appear to be any closer to returning, coach Steve Mariucci said.

49ers.com reports C Jeremy Newberry participated in the team's walkthough at the Georgia Dome this morning. He will be a gametime decision tomorrow. "He say's he feels better but we really won't know until he comes out tomorrow and tests it out on the turf," said coach Steve Mariucci. Backup C Ben Lynch did not make the trip to Atlanta, instead being held back in the Bay Area with a cast on his injured right ankle. MLB Derek Smith made the trip, but will not play.

Backup Ben Lynch was on crutches and downgraded to doubtful. Lynch sustained a sprained right ankle against the Panthers last week. Jeremy Newberry and Ben Lynch hobbling around on sprained ankles and the 49ers aren't sure who's going to snap the ball Sunday when they visit the Atlanta Falcons. "We've got to decide how we're going to do that center thing," coach Steve Mariucci said. The team hopes Newberry can play. Newberry said he expects to play Sunday. If Newberry or Lynch can't play, Mariucci said right guard Dave Fiore might shift to center.

He is expected to at practice on Tuesday. Other players injured Saturday are expected to return to practice at some point this week, including RBs Jonas Lewis (left ribs) and Saladin McCullough (finger), LB Jeff Ulbrich (right knee bruise), S Ronnie Heard (shoulder), KR/PR David Allen (shoulder) and QB Rick Mirer (right elbow bruise). Matt Maiocco reports for the Press Democrat the 49ers tender offers to some of their other exclusive-rights free agents were: OC Ben Lynch and P Chad Stanley, two-year veterans, were tendered at $389,000, while RB Jonas Lewis and S Ronnie Heard, coming off their rookie seasons, were tendered at $298,000. Dan Dercher, who was not tendered an offer, fell out of favor with management after declining an assignment to NFL Europe. The 49ers can free up more cap space later by signing S Lance Schulters, tendered the high offer of 1.488 million, to a long-term deal and reducing his cap figure for the upcoming season. The 49ers will also try to lock up QB Jeff Garcia and FB Fred Beasley to a long-term contracts prior to training camp.

According to their official site, the San Francisco 49ers made tender offers to nine free agents today. FS Lance Schulters, FB Fred Beasley, LB Jeff Posey and K Wade Richey were the restricted free agents issued tenders. Schulters was given the highest tender meaning his compensatioin will be first and third round draft choices. Beasely was given the middle tender of $1.115 million which requires a first round pick as compensation. Posey and Richey were given minimum tenders of $512,000. The 49ers made tenders to exclusive-rights free agents, QB Jeff Garcia, RB Jonas Lewis, C Ben Lynch, S Ronnie Heard and P Chad Stanley.
