Rays | Alex Cobb to have Tommy John surgery

Fri, 08 May 2015 13:01:21 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) said he will undergo Tommy John surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) will miss the rest of this season and likely a part of the 2016 season because of the injury. Owners can consider dropping Cobb from their roster if they were holding onto him.

Rays | Alex Cobb undecided on surgery

Thu, 07 May 2015 15:12:33 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) said he'll wait a few weeks to see if his platelet-rich plasma injections in his right elbow work, but if not, he'll strongly consider undergoing Tommy John surgery. Right now, Cobb said he's going back and forth on a decision. He is skeptical that the tear in his ulnar collateral ligament will heal on its own. Cobb will rest for a week and then do light activity in the second week.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) will likely succumb to the tear in his elbow, undergo elbow reconstruction and miss all of the 2015 season. However, as he tries to avoid surgery for now and pitch through it, you'll want to leave him in a DL slot in traditional leagues.

Rays | Alex Cobb receives injections

Wed, 06 May 2015 10:10:44 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) has received platelet-rich plasma injections in his elbow in hopes that he can pitch through a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow this year. Cobb will rest for at least two weeks to see if the injections help. If not, he'll likely need to have Tommy John surgery and be out for most and maybe all of the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) owners should keep him stashed in a DL slot for now, but history isn't on his side while attempting to pitch through a partially torn elbow ligament. If you haven't already, make plans for rotation help. Matt Moore, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery of his own, could return sometime in June and will immediately return to the starting rotation.

Rays | Alex Cobb hopes to pitch again in 2015

Tue, 05 May 2015 16:35:31 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) will attempt to get through a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament by resting and getting treatments, according to the team's president of baseball operations Matt Silverman, Tuesday, May 5. Cobb and the Rays' training staff believe he can pitch again this season.

Fantasy Tip: Season-long owners should keep Cobb stashed in a DL spot if possible. If immediate help is needed, or if a tempting option emerges on the waiver wire, it appears as though owners don't need to be excessively patient with Cobb at this point. Unless more promising news comes out in the next couple of weeks, Cobb could be dropped sooner rather than later.

Rays | Alex Cobb to pitch through injury

Tue, 05 May 2015 14:44:23 -0700

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) will attempt to pitch through a partial tear in his elbow ligament.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) faces an uphill battle to avoid what would likely be Tommy John surgery. If fantasy owners learned anything about Masahiro Tanaka, it's that pitching through ligament tears usually leads to a DL trip eventually. Cobb is already on the DL and likely wouldn't return in another few weeks, at the earliest, anyway. Continue to stash him in a DL slot everywhere, but this one could be over quickly.

Rays | Alex Cobb has ligament tear

Tue, 05 May 2015 09:44:18 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) is dealing with a partial tear of his elbow ligament, which was discovered in a new MRI exam. He will see how his elbow responds to rest.

Fantasy Tip: This is terrible news for Cobb ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) and his owners, and it means he'll be out for much longer and possibly the rest of the 2015 season, depending on how he responds to rest. Nathan Karns ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) and Alex Colome ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) might be safe in the rotation for the foreseeable future now.

Rays | Alex Cobb has setback

Mon, 04 May 2015 14:20:39 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) had a setback and has stopped his throwing program. He will be re-evaluated.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) will likely not be able to return to the rotation for at least another month now, and maybe longer. You'll have to remain patient with him in standard leagues. Nathan Karns and Alex Colome will have more run with a rotation spot with Cobb's setback.

Rays | Alex Cobb feels great after mound session

Fri, 24 Apr 2015 14:30:02 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) said he felt "great" after throwing his first session off a mound Friday, April 24. It was the first time Cobb threw off a mound since leaving a spring training game March 17, and being diagnosed with elbow tendinitis.

Fantasy Tip: Barring any setbacks, expect Cobb ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) to return to the bump in approximately two weeks. It would be wise to allow him to work his way back into top form before utilizing him in FantasyScore contests and seasonal leagues. Continue to check back for updates on his recovery progress and an official word on when he'll return.

Rays | Alex Cobb steadily improving

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 14:50:04 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (forearm) played catch without feeling any pain for the second consecutive day Wednesday, April 22. He is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session Friday, April 24. Cobb was diagnosed with forearm tendinitis in late March.

Fantasy Tip: Barring a setback, expect Cobb ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) to return to the hill in approximately two weeks. FantasyScore players would be wise to allow him to wet his feet with a few starts before utilizing in contests, though. In seasonal leagues, Cobb should continue to be stashed in all formats.

Rays | Alex Cobb to throw 'pen Friday

Tue, 21 Apr 2015 13:24:36 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (forearm) is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session Friday, April 24.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) is likely still a week or two away from making his season debut for the Rays. He should continue to be stashed everywhere, and FantasyScore players will likely want to avoid him initially.
