Sat, 03 Jun 2006 07:31:34 -0700

Bart Hubbuch, of the Florida Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars FB Derrick Wimbush (arm) said he would need surgery to repair a broken bone in his left arm. Wimbush, a backup fullback who doubles as a kickoff returner, would not specify the exact injury but said the imminent surgery could cause him to miss training camp and the preseason. "I'm going to give it 100 percent to be back in time (for training camp), but we'll see," said Wimbush. He said the injury occurred Thursday, June 1, near the end of a voluntary team workout. If Wimbush is slow to come back, the Jaguars have options at returner in RB LaBrandon Toefield, WR Troy Edwards, WR Chad Owens and second-round draft pick RB Maurice Drew.

Steelers | Ward willing to offer help if asked

Wed, 10 May 2006 21:46:23 -0700

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Santonio Holmes made a good first impression on WR Hines Ward when they met last week. Ward would like to help assimilate him into the team's offense, but learned from two past wide receivers about offering such help. Ward said, "If he wants to be helped and asks, I'm more than willing. But for me to go out of the way to try to help somebody, I'm not going to do it. I did that before, and it didn't work." Ward said he was rebuffed by free agent WR Troy Edwards (Lions) and WR Plaxico Burress, currently with the New York Giants, when they were with the team. Ward claimed both first-round draft picks did not respect him because he was drafted in the third-round. He said he took WR Antwaan Randle El, now with the Washington Redskins, under his wing because he asked for help.

Lions | Rogers getting snaps at Z receiver; but it remains R. Williams' job

Fri, 02 Dec 2005 05:54:15 -0800

The Detroit Free Press reports Detroit Lions WR Charles Rogers has wanted to return to Z, the coveted receiving position in the West Coast offense, and he got some snaps there the past two practices. However, the starting job at that position belongs to WR Roy Williams. Offensive co-coordinator Greg Olson, who is now calling the plays, sounds like he wants to throw to Rogers more often. "Charles has practiced better," Olson said. "We're trying to find a niche for him or a role for him. Obviously Roy Williams is our featured receiver and we plan on getting the ball to Roy, but somebody else has got to pick up the slack there in that group." Rogers needs to earn a spot to be on the team's 45-man active list for this weekend's game. Rogers, rookie WR Mike Williams and WR Troy Edwards are competing for one or two spots.

Lions | M. Williams Week 12 status unknown

Mon, 21 Nov 2005 16:58:22 -0800

Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci said a decision will have to be made in Week 12 on WR Mike Williams. "We have six receivers and they are all finally healthy," said Mariucci. "We have to pick and choose who is going to be active. We stayed the same as the week before - the week before was one where (Williams) missed practice and (WR) Troy Edwards was up as our third. We just felt that we would keep it the same for our last game. We are going to have to make that decision again." Mariucci said Williams has not asked what he needs to do to get in the game, but has told the rookie to keep working hard so he can compete for playing time.

Titans | T. Edwards Cut - Temporarily

Sat, 10 Sep 2005 20:25:37 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Tennessee Titans have released WR Troy Edwards, but only temporarily. He was one of several vested veterans league wide who were released Saturday, Sept. 10, for salary cap and payroll purposes. Under terms of the collective bargaining agreement, a vested veteran, a player with four or more seasons accrued toward the NFL pension plan, is guaranteed his full base salary for the year if he is on an opening-day roster. To avoid the guarantee, teams often release fringe vested players before the start of the season, then re-sign them after the opener. He is expected to be re-signed next week.

But Jones also said, "I haven't lost the starting job yet." Jones said his primary function Sunday will be to back up WR Troy Edwards as the punt returner and that he expects to be a backup on both defense and special teams "until I feel comfortable."

Sat, 03 Sep 2005 08:44:49 -0700

Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans WR Troy Edwards has taken over for rookie CB Adam Jones as the team's No. 1 punt returner. Jones muffed two punts in Thursday's preseason finale against the Packers after mishandling two punts a week earlier in San Francisco. "I believe in time he'll be a good punt returner," head coach Jeff Fisher said about Jones. Fisher plans to let Jones try returning kickoffs in practice, he returned kickoffs in college at West Virginia, even though rookie WR Courtney Roby has a solid grasp on that job.

He is currently listed as a backup wide receiver. "The depth chart might have him No. 2 going into camp, but he's a No. 1 as far as the coaches are concerned," said Jaguars' player personnel director James 'Shack' Harris. "He's got the experience, skills and numbers of a first team guy." Edwards has increased his catch total in each of his two years with the team. "We were very pleased with Troy and what he meant to the offense," said Bill Musgrave, the former offensive coordinator for the Jaguars. "He's the type of player who has the potential of breaking one every time he makes a catch." Edwards can also contribute as a kick return specialist.
