Ward would like to help assimilate him into the team's offense, but learned from two past wide receivers about offering such help. Ward said, "If he wants to be helped and asks, I'm more than willing. But for me to go out of the way to try to help somebody, I'm not going to do it. I did that before, and it didn't work." Ward said he was rebuffed by free agent WR Troy Edwards (Lions) and WR Plaxico Burress, currently with the New York Giants, when they were with the team. Ward claimed both first-round draft picks did not respect him because he was drafted in the third-round. He said he took WR Antwaan Randle El, now with the Washington Redskins, under his wing because he asked for help.

The Detroit Free Press reports Detroit Lions WR Charles Rogers has wanted to return to Z, the coveted receiving position in the West Coast offense, and he got some snaps there the past two practices. However, the starting job at that position belongs to WR Roy Williams. Offensive co-coordinator Greg Olson, who is now calling the plays, sounds like he wants to throw to Rogers more often. "Charles has practiced better," Olson said. "We're trying to find a niche for him or a role for him. Obviously Roy Williams is our featured receiver and we plan on getting the ball to Roy, but somebody else has got to pick up the slack there in that group." Rogers needs to earn a spot to be on the team's 45-man active list for this weekend's game. Rogers, rookie WR Mike Williams and WR Troy Edwards are competing for one or two spots.

We just felt that we would keep it the same for our last game. We are going to have to make that decision again." Mariucci said Williams has not asked what he needs to do to get in the game, but has told the rookie to keep working hard so he can compete for playing time.

He was one of several vested veterans league wide who were released Saturday, Sept. 10, for salary cap and payroll purposes. Under terms of the collective bargaining agreement, a vested veteran, a player with four or more seasons accrued toward the NFL pension plan, is guaranteed his full base salary for the year if he is on an opening-day roster. To avoid the guarantee, teams often release fringe vested players before the start of the season, then re-sign them after the opener. He is expected to be re-signed next week.
