Sun, 14 Apr 2013 08:20:32 -0700 Miami Marlins OF Justin Ruggiano (groin) will start in right field against the Philadelphia Phillies Sunday, April 14. He will bat sixth.
Sat, 13 Apr 2013 16:14:43 -0700 Miami Marlins OF Justin Ruggiano (groin) was scratched from the starting lineup Saturday, April 13, because of a tight right groin. He is considered day-to-day at this point.
Sun, 31 Mar 2013 09:41:44 -0700 Miami Marlins manager Mike Redmond said OFs Chris Coghlan and Justin Ruggiano will platoon in center field until someone steps up and takes over the job full-time.
Tue, 19 Mar 2013 15:10:37 -0700 Miami Marlins manager Mike Redmond said he may choose to go with a platoon in center field to start the year. OF Christian Yelich may be Redmond's top choice, but he's expected to start the season at Double-A Jacksonville. Yelich is hitting .381 this spring and leads the team with five home runs and 13 RBIs. "I play him all the time. I love him. Like I said, he's had a great spring. He's done everything we've asked of him. But at the end of the day, he's never had an at-bat above A ball, and we have to make sure we're doing the right thing for him and the organization," Redmond said. OFs Chris Coghlan, Gorkys Hernandez and Justin Ruggiano (back) are the realistic candidates. Ruggiano is 1-for-11 after returning from a back injury and doesn't look 100 percent healthy. Coghlan has a minor league option left, but he appears to deserve a spot the most. The team will not move OF Juan Pierre from left field to center. Fantasy Tip: Ruggiano is in line for regression after a very fortunate hit rate last season as he emerged out of nowhere. He's somewhat intriguing, but mainly only for his power. Coghlan and Hernandez only stand out in NL-only leagues, and their luster is lessened with platoon possibilities. Yelich will probably see major league at-bats later in the season.
Fri, 08 Mar 2013 16:27:09 -0800 Miami Marlins 3B Placido Polanco (back) will sit out a few more games while dealing with back spasms. "He's having that same problem," manager Mike Redmond said. "No timetable. He's got to figure out what's going on, what's grabbing on him and where he is." OF Justin Ruggiano (back) is scheduled to play Saturday, March 9, in center field. OF Jake Marisnick (hand) hit in the cages and did fielding drills Friday, March 8. 3B Greg Dobbs (calf) continues to do drills but isn't playing in games.
Thu, 07 Mar 2013 15:39:43 -0800 The Miami Marlins' center field job is wide open, with OFs Justin Ruggiano (back) and Chris Coghlan competing for the spot. Ruggiano is hoping to make his spring debut Saturday, March 9, after being bothered by a tight lower back. Coghlan is 6-for-20 (.300) with a double and two RBIs in his seven spring games. "We're going to run him out in center. We haven't had anybody stand out yet, so there's still an opportunity for somebody to take that job. Right now, he's swinging the bat and doing everything he can possibly do," manager Mike Redmond said of Coghlan. OFs Gorkys Hernandez, Bryan Petersen and Kevin Mattison are secondary options. Hernandez is out of minor league options, however, and Coghlan has one option left. OFs Jake Marisnick and Christian Yelich will open with Double-A Jacksonville.
Sat, 23 Feb 2013 23:32:11 -0800 Miami Marlins OF Gorkys Hernandez started in the outfield Saturday, Feb. 23, in place of OF Justin Ruggiano (back). Marlins manager Mike Redmond said there are other options in case Ruggiano is out for a while. "Bryan Petersen, Chris Coghlan, those guys can also go in there," Redmond said. "We'll mix guys in, Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick. I'm going to get them in some games, too. I'd like to see them play. We got some other guys: Kevin Mattison. We'll try to mix guys in and out as much as we possibly can and see how it all shakes out."
Fri, 22 Feb 2013 06:27:06 -0800 Miami Marlins OF Justin Ruggiano (back) had an MRI on his stiff lower back and is awaiting the results.
Thu, 21 Feb 2013 12:25:57 -0800 Miami Marlins OF Justin Ruggiano (back) cut short his drills Thursday, Feb. 21, with lower back stiffness, and he's listed as day-to-day. Ruggiano is the front-runner to be the starting center fielder this year.
Wed, 13 Feb 2013 14:20:30 -0800 The Miami Marlins have not look to trade for a centerfielder this offseason because they believe OF Justin Ruggiano will be a good stopgap at the position and believe OF Christian Yelich could be in the majors by late 2013.
