Cubs | Chris Coghlan avoids arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 14:02:06 -0800

Chicago Cubs OF Chris Coghlan re-signed a one-year, $4.8 million contract to avoid arbitration Friday, Jan. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Coghlan hit a career-high 16 home runs last season, and he caught the eye of skipper Joe Maddon, and the manager leaned on him in a utility role at second base and in the outfield. The Cubs are a deeper team heading into 2016, though, so playing time is a real concern for Coghlan's fantasy stock. Unless things change, he is likely best left to cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta to be tendered

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 11:46:10 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta is expected to be tendered a contract by the deadline Wednesday, Dec. 2. SP Travis Wood, RPs Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon, Justin Grimm, Ryan Cook and Rex Brothers and OF Chris Coghlan are also expected to be tendered. Arrieta will be a free agent after the 2017 season, and the Cubs are interested in a long-term deal.

Fantasy Tip: After Arrieta's Cy Young season in 2015, he'll surely be very expensive in fantasy baseball drafts next spring. He has now risen to the elite level of starting pitchers, and you'll have to spend an early round pick to secure him.

Cubs | Jorge Soler not in NLCS Game 2 lineup

Sun, 18 Oct 2015 13:19:37 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler is not in the starting lineup Sunday, Oct. 18, for Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the New York Mets. OF Chris Coghlan is in right field and hitting sixth against Mets SP Noah Syndergaard.

Fantasy Tip: Soler ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) is hitting .268-8-34 against right-handed pitching, but he has a .200 average against the Mets. He will probably see pinch-hitting duty at some point, but for now leave him out of FantasyScore lineups.

Cubs | Jorge Soler in RF again

Mon, 12 Oct 2015 11:07:22 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler is starting in right field and is hitting second against St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha in Game 3 of the division series Monday, Oct. 12. OF Chris Coghlan will start on the bench.

Fantasy Tip: Soler ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is riding a high right now after carrying the Cubbies to the win in Game 2, and he's in a favorable lineup spot against Wacha, who has struggled to close out the season. Soler isn't a bad pick in one of your three outfield spots on FantasyScore.

Cubs | Austin Jackson starting in left field

Sat, 10 Oct 2015 11:43:17 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Austin Jackson will bat sixth and play left field against St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia in Game 2 of the National League Division Series Saturday, Oct. 10. OF Chris Coghlan is not in the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Jackson ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) draws the start in Game 2 because he hit .281 with six home runs and 25 RBIs in 167 at-bats versus lefties in the regular season, while Coghlan ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) hit just .116 against southpaws. Jackson was on a hot streak at the plate to end the regular season, so he's definitely worthy of consideration for FantasyScore lineups tonight.

Chicago Cubs 2B Tommy La Stella is starting at third base and is hitting fifth in the wild-card game against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole Wednesday, Oct. 7. OF Chris Coghlan will start on the bench.

Fantasy Tip: La Stella ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) can help with salary cap relief in the wild-card matchup on FantasyScore. He's a deep sleeper, though, after hitting .286 (18-for-63) with a home run against righties in limited action this season.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber receiving day off

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 11:32:45 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Kyle Schwarber is not in the starting lineup against Milwaukee Brewers SP Jorge Lopez Sunday, Oct. 4. OF Chris Coghlan will play right field and bat second.

Fantasy Tip: Coghlan ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) went 3-for-4 against Milwaukee Saturday, but had just one hit in 21 at-bats prior to that. Better outfield options are available in FantasyScore for that price.

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 12:18:19 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Chris Coghlan will bat sixth and play left field against Milwaukee Brewers SP Tyler Wagner Saturday, Oct. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Coghlan ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has just one hit in his last 21 at-bats and is not a recommended starting option in FantasyScore for now.

Cubs | Tommy La Stella starting at third

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 12:29:25 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Tommy La Stella is starting at third base and batting ninth against Milwaukee Brewers SP Ariel Pena Friday, Oct. 2. 2B Chris Coghlan is not in the starting lineup Friday.

Fantasy Tip: La Stella ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) is nothing more than a low-end flier for FantasyScore contests Friday. He has a .263/.328/.404 slash line with three runs, one home run and 10 RBI. Coghlan ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has only started two of the past seven games, so seasonal owners might want to add an everyday player for the weekend.
