Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports the one-year contract signed by Pittsburgh Steelers TE Matt Cushing is worth $540,000 in base salary and includes a $25,000 signing bonus. Cushing's salary cap figure for 2005 will be $475,000 since there are league rules that allow veterans to earn more money than they count under the cap on certain one-year contracts.

The other backup tight end, Matt Cushing, is also the backup fullback, so Cowher likes to keep him active, leaving no room for Bruener, who is earning $800,000 to do little more than practice. He has dressed for just one game.

Updating an earlier story, the Post Gazette reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have given LB Joey Porter and RB Amos Zereoue one-year, $1,227,000 tender offers. Both will carry a first-round draft choice as compensation, if another team signs them to an offer sheet. The team's remaining five restricted free agents received the minimum one-year, $563,000 tender offers and all would carry the draft pick equal to the round they were drafted in as compensation. Those players and their draft pick compensation are: PK Kris Brown (7), OL Oliver Ross (5), TEs Matt Cushing (none) and Jerame Tuman (5). Cushing was not drafted. Exclusive-rights free agent FB Dan Kreider also received a $375,000 one-year contract tender from the team.

The Tribune Review speculates the Pittsburgh Steelers may give restricted free agent LB Joey Porter and DL Aaron Smith might get a larger tender offer ($1.227 million) to protect them as their compensation would be a first-round draft pick. Four other restricted free agents, PK Kris Brown, backup RB Amos Zereoue, backup TE Jerame Tuman and backup OL Oliver Ross, might get the smallest tender ($563,000). Their compensation would be a draft pick in the round they were selected originally. In the case of those four players, that's a seventh (Brown), third (Zereoue) and fifth (Tuman and Ross). Two others, backup TE Matt Cushing and long snapper Mike Schneck may not be tendered.

As an update to previous stories, the Post Gazette reports the Pittsburgh Steelers now think FB Jon Witman (back) should be OK by the end of the week. Also, Dan Kreider might be ready to practice next week. Kreider has not practiced this summer since the "pop" he felt in his calf during a walk-through on July 20 turned out to be a torn muscle. Ron Jaynes will start at fullback against the Bills with converted TE Matt Cushing behind him.

The Post Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher said he is hopeful FB Dan Kreider, who hasn't practiced since sustaining a calf injury the first day of camp, will be ready for the team's season opener. TE Matt Cushing will remain at fullback while Kreider and fellow FB Jon Witman (back) sit out with injuries. The team expects to find out today the extent of the knee injury CB Chad Scott sustained in the first quarter Saturday.

As an update to an earlier story, the Post-Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers FB Dan Kreider is now expected to miss about two weeks of training camp with a strained calf muscle, but the Steelers were relieved his injury was not more serious. There was some concern about possible damage to the Achilles' tendon, but none was found. Jon Witman took over as the No. 1 fullback in practice. TE Matt Cushing also took some snaps at fullback.
