Tampa Bay Rays 3B Evan Longoria (hamstring) will not play Tuesday, May 1, and the team is still unsure how long he'll be out. SS Elliot Johnson could play third in the short term, and the Rays could call up INFs Reid Brignac or Will Rhymes if Longoria lands on the disabled list.

The Tampa Bay Rays are expected to option SS Reid Brignac to Triple-A Durham Sunday, April 22, after claiming 1B Brandon Allen off waivers from the Oakland Athletics. Brignac managed just two hits in his first 17 at-bats (.118).

Tampa Bay Rays SS Reid Brignac (foot) is still competing for the starting shortstop gig with INF Sean Rodriguez despite missing time with his foot injury. "He's still competing," manager Joe Maddon said. "He's doing really well. He's been playing well in the Minor League games. He had to jump twice (for line drives) yesterday. He's been running well. We just have to monitor it, and it's whatever his tolerance is." Brignac is 7-for-18 (.389) in seven spring games, while Rodriguez is hitting .200 (7-for-35) in 15 games. Maddon said he could use a platoon situation at the position.

Tampa Bay Rays SS Reid Brignac (foot) has been cleared to play in Grapefruit League games. He said if his tendon pops he will be out two weeks to a month while it heals.

Tampa Bay Rays OF B.J. Upton (back) is not playing in a minor league game Wednesday, March 28. However, SS Reid Brignac (foot) will play in another minor league contest as he recovers from plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

Tampa Bay Rays SS Reid Brignac (foot) received a cortisone shot in his right foot for an injury that manager Joe Maddon is calling plantar fasciitis. Brignac's availability for opening day is in question. He's competing with 2B Sean Rodriguez for a full-time job.
