Red Sox | Steven Wright productive for Boston

Wed, 04 May 2016 10:54:24 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright is the ninth pitcher in Red Sox history in the last 100 years to start a season with five starts of six-plus innings and two runs or less.

Fantasy Tip: Wright owns a 1.67 ERA and has struck out 31 hitters in 32 1/3 innings in five starts so far. We've seen knuckleballers bloom late before, but a high strand rate (80.3%) and low opponent's batting average on balls in play (.247) say Wright is bound for regression eventually. He's a popular waiver wire target right now, but be careful with him and play the matchups only in deeper mixed and AL-only leagues.

Red Sox | Steven Wright whiffs eight in win

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 21:35:23 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright allowed two runs - one earned - and three hits over seven innings with three walks and eight strikeouts in a win Wednesday, April 27, against the Atlanta Braves.

Fantasy Tip: That's four outings and four quality starts for Wright, who looks to be the new Tim Wakefield in Beantown. Fantasy owners can trust him in all AL-only leagues, and he is certainly worth using in deeper mixed formats and DFS as well.

Red Sox | Steven Wright posts quality start, win

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 21:51:26 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright allowed one unearned run, four hits and five walks over 6 2/3 innings in a win Friday, April 22, against the Houston Astros. He struck out six batters in the 116-pitch quality start.

Fantasy Tip: Wright was impressive working around the walks, but he'll need to work that number down if he hopes to see many more victories. He is worth using in deeper AL-only leagues and as a salary saver in DFS.

Red Sox | Steven Wright takes Sunday loss

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 14:16:27 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright took the loss Sunday, April 17, when his team fell 5-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays. Wright gave up two runs and six hits in six innings, struck out six and walked none.

Fantasy Tip: This is the second loss for Wright in eight days, both against Toronto. However, both starts had some highlights to them. Don't give up on Wright, as he shows signs of being a solid fantasy pitcher. Wright just needs better hitting around him in his starts.

Red Sox | Steven Wright officially wins job

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 09:04:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright was officially named the Red Sox's No. 5 starter Wednesday, March 30, after SP Roenis Elias was sent to Class AAA.

Fantasy Tip: Wright is not the next coming of Tim Wakefield, so relax. The 31-year-old knuckleballer isn't likely to pull an R.A. Dickey, either. He's likely a placeholder in the rotation until Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) is healthy. Wright is a short-term innings eater in deep AL-only affairs.

Red Sox | Steven Wright close to winning job

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 09:18:14 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright is favored to win the No. 5 rotation job, as manager John Farrell said he is "leaning" toward naming Wright the winner of the competition. SP Roenis Elias looks like the odd-man out for a roster spot because he's not well-suited for a relief role.

Fantasy Tip: Another knuckleballer in Boston's rotation. This isn't another R.A. Dickey, though. Wright doesn't have great control and struggles to limit fly balls, a combination that can be deadly at Fenway Park or anywhere for that matter. He's strictly a desperation play for AL-only owners looking for innings.

Red Sox | Boston rotation not finalized

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 12:57:11 -0700

Boston Red Sox SPs Rick Porcello, Joe Kelly and either Roenis Elias or Steven Wright will fill out the remainder of the rotation after SPs David Price and Clay Buchholz, but the order and fifth starter have not been determined, according to manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Porcello and Kelly are both inconsistent and nothing more than low-end options in deep mixed leagues. There is spot-start upside for both, but limiting your exposure to favorable matchups and AL-only leagues is advised. Elias and Wright are also just AL-only options with little upside.

Red Sox | Steven Wright has leg up

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 16:27:37 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright has a lead on SPs Henry Owens and Roenis Elias for the final starting rotation spot with SP Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) not expected to be ready until late April. Wright has given up two earned runs in seven innings in two Grapefruit League starts. Owens has allowed four runs in 7 2/3 innings in three starts and Elias has allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings in three outings.

Fantasy Tip: Wright is a knuckler that has trouble locating and keeping the ball out of the air. That's not a good combination, and he shouldn't be any anyone's radar aside from deep AL leagues if he wins the job.

Red Sox | Eduardo Rodriguez to throw Wednesday

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 14:15:33 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) will throw off a mound Wednesday, March 16, for the first time in three weeks. However, the Red Sox don't expect the left-hander to be ready by opening day. Rodriguez hasn't done anything but long toss since dislocating his right kneecap Feb. 27. Boston won't need a fifth starter until April 10. SPs Henry Owens, Roenis Elias and Steven Wright are candidates to take Rodriguez's rotation spot if he's not ready.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez has plenty of upside but remains a work in progress. His injury will likely keep him from being an asset in mixed league drafts, but he's worth a flyer in AL-only formats. Owens is the most intriguing if he takes the open spot and is also worth stashing in AL leagues.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly in line to start

Thu, 18 Feb 2016 10:00:19 -0800

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly is in line to be the team's No. 5 starter, according to manager John Farrell. Ps Tom Layne and Steven Wright are the leading candidates to fill the final two bullpen spots.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly throws hard. So far that's really all he's shown, although he has glimpses of greatness. Too much inconsistency to rely on him for anything more than a bench spot in deep mixed leagues.
