Red Sox | Justin Masterson throws Sunday

Mon, 18 May 2015 04:37:20 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson (shoulder) threw on flat ground Sunday, May 17, and manager John Farrell said the swelling in Masterson's right shoulder has lessened. He would like to get Masterson back on the mound by mid-week for some throwing sessions.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) was ineffective for two games prior to his shoulder diagnosis, so hopefully this is the culprit. Still, you have to wonder whether Masterson will be back in the rotation right away or gradually eased in. Steven Wright has been a mixed bag of success in place of Masterson.

Thu, 14 May 2015 11:21:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis Thursday, May 14.

Fantasy Tip: With Masterson ailing, Steven Wright is expected to receive the start against the Seattle Mariners Sunday. You can avoid Wright everywhere.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson likely heading to DL

Wed, 13 May 2015 10:56:20 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson is likely headed to the disabled list due to fatigue.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) won't make his start this Sunday, and Steven Wright is a candidate to make the start against the Seattle Mariners. Masterson is sporting a 6.37 ERA in seven starts this year after allowing six earned runs in just 2 1/3 innings to the Oakland Athletics last night. He's not worth holding onto in shallow mixed leagues.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson rocked again

Wed, 13 May 2015 00:24:47 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson allowed six runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings of work Tuesday, May 12, against the Oakland Athletics. He dropped to 0-6 with a 7.26 ERA in appearances at Oakland.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) may be in trouble with the Red Sox brass. Manager John Farrell told reporters afterward Masterson clearly wasn't right. Bench Masterson in your leagues if you have him active. This could turn out to be either an injury or a sign a demotion from the rotation is coming.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson struggles against Oakland

Tue, 12 May 2015 09:11:06 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson is 2-7 with a 6.61 ERA in 14 career outings against the Oakland Athletics, including 10 starts. Masterson faces the A's Tuesday, May 12.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) is sporting a 2-1 record but has a 5.18 ERA and 1.58 WHIP and a 6.3 K/9 rate in 33 innings in 2015. He's allowed at least three earned runs in four of his last five starts, too. He's not a strong option at FantasyScore tonight unless you're looking for a contrarian play.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson improves to 2-0

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 15:42:23 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson struck out six batters over five innings for his second win of the season against the Baltimore Orioles Monday, April 20. He allowed a single earned run on three hits and three walks.

Fantasy Tip: In favorable matchups, Masterson ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is a nice low-priced target for FantasyScore players. He has shown flashes of excellent strikeout ability and kept his ratios in check in the past, too. However, Fenway Park is a difficult hitting environment, and this was Masterson's first decent start of the season.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson strong in re-debut

Thu, 09 Apr 2015 18:28:45 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson went six strong innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs and two walks Thursday, April 9, against the Philadelphia Phillies. Masterson struck out seven and left in line for the win. It was Masterson's first appearance with the Red Sox since 2009.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) struggled mightily in 2014, splitting time between the Cleveland Indians and St. Louis Cardinals. Masterson got off to a good start as he tries to rebound from a season in which he went 7-9 with a 5.88 ERA and a WHIP of 1.63.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson says he's healthy

Mon, 15 Dec 2014 08:55:19 -0800

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson (knee), who said poor health was the reason for his disappointing 2014 season, said that he is fully healthy this offseason. "But we've been able to loosen that up, get some of my rotation back and I think that's going to be one of the driving factors for me to have my velocity back and be just as effective as I have been (previously)," Masterson said. The Red Sox are also confident that Masterson will return to form next year in their starting rotation.

He will receive a $9.5 million base salary and could earn an additional $2.5 million in performance bonuses based on innings pitched. Masterson will earn $500,000 each if he reaches 185, 190, 195, 200 and 205 innings.
