It was his first 100-yard rushing game since the 2002 season. While Zereoue knows he had an impressive outing, he is not sure if it will lead to more playing time.

Head coach Norv Turner believes the situation will resolve itself this summer. "I think there's a bunch of guys that see themselves as our starting tailback, and I think it'll work out when we get to camp," Turner said. "And I think when you have competition, and you have guys who've played, you have an opportunity to come up with a featured runner. That's our goal. If we don't come up with that, I do know we have guys who have been productive." Wheatley seemingly is the favorite heading into camp.

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Amos Zereoue said he doesn't see RB Jerome Bettis and himself both being back with the Steelers next season. Zereoue is signed through 2005 and is supposed to earn $2.2 million next year, while Bettis is slated to make $3.757 million and is under contract through 2006. Zereoue said he is a "1,500-yard back" and circumstances in Pittsburgh don't allow him to go out and prove it. He added the last few years have been tough on him because his margin of error was very small.

Jerry DiPaola and Joe Starkey, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, report Pittsburgh Steelers RB Amos Zereoue is looking to improve his rushing production that presently ranks him 19 in the NFL. The Steelers, as a team, rank 26 in rushing this season. Zereoue identified various problems plaguing the team's rushing attack. "Sometimes, it's schemes," Zereoue said. "Sometimes, mental errors. Those guys on the other side of the ball get paid, too. We just need to step it up. I can run a lot better than I am right now."

KFFL has learned Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jerome Bettis (groin) hurt his groin once again. According to sources close to the situation, Bettis' injury isn't as severe as the one in past years but this one may prevent him from practicing this week. The Steelers have sufficient depth at the position now with Amos Zereoue starting and Verron Haynes working as the third down back, so they're not going to rush Bettis back into action.

Bob Labriola, of Steelers.com, reports Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher said at a Wednesday, Aug. 20 news conference that Steelers RB Amos Zereoue would open the 2003 season as the starting running back. Cowher said he came to a "gut" decision Monday, Aug. 18, two days after the Steelers' second pre-season game, and informed Zereoue and Steelers RB Jerome Bettis of the decision. "We will use Jerome and Amos a lot," said Cowher. "Both of them will play, and hopefully we'll be able to keep them fresh all year. But we don't have any preconceived notions. Whoever is running the best will play."
