Fri, 18 Sep 2009 07:29:58 -0700 Ron Cook, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports retired RB Jerome Bettis was critical of his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, in particular the running backs. "Willie Parker: I haven't seen much from him," Bettis wrote in a column for SI.com. "Rashard Mendenhall: I haven't really seen him, period ...The running back I like least on that team is Frank Summers, the rookie fullback. He doesn't seem to understand what's going on. He's missing plenty of blocks." Bettis was also critical of the offensive line. "They have no continuity. On top of not being able to protect Ben Roethlisberger, they're letting running backs get hit before they reach the line of scrimmage ... The problem isn't anything new, and I blame the coaching staff for not addressing the line in the offseason ... Pittsburgh can't repeat with the line playing like this."
Wed, 03 Jun 2009 07:03:00 -0700 Bob Raissman, of the New York Daily News, reports former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy has inked a deal to join NBC's Sunday "Football Night in America" pregame team, according to industry sources. Dungy is expected to replace Jerome Bettis.
Wed, 06 May 2009 13:35:39 -0700 Neil Best, of Newsday, reports NBC likely will not renew of the contract of retired RB and NFL analyst Jerome Bettis for this upcoming season and beyond.
Fri, 26 Dec 2008 05:32:23 -0800 Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams DL La'Roi Glover (knee) will need offseason knee surgery to repair torn cartilage and is considering retirement. "I don't know yet. I really don't," Glover said when asked if he wanted to keep playing beyond this season. "We'll get the last (game) going, try to win it, take a break. See how the family's feeling. Talk to my wife about it, and go from there." However, Glover has thought about retirement enough that he has talked to other players about it. "I talked (Saturday) to a guy who was retired about trying to go out like a Michael Strahan or a Jerome Bettis," Glover said.
Wed, 22 Aug 2007 13:00:33 -0700 Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports former NFL RB Jerome Bettis said in his new book that he believes former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher helped Steelers' management run former NFL QB Kordell Stewart out of town because he was due a big contract after his Pro Bowl season in 2001. "You bench your Pro Bowl quarterback for a guy who had been out of football for years, who hadn't started an NFL game in 10 seasons? That just doesn't happen by accident. I think they pulled Kordell partly because they didn't want to pay him a big salary and signing bonus. It was cheaper for them if he didn't have success. If he recovered and had a huge year, then the public sentiment would be, 'Hey, you've got to re-sign him for whatever it costs.' I'm telling you, it was a monetary decision. The Steelers had no interest in paying Kordell his market value," Bettis said in his book.
Wed, 22 Aug 2007 12:44:03 -0700 Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports former NFL RB Jerome Bettis said in his new book that the Pittsburgh Steelers wanted to release him in the summer of 2000 because they wanted to give the starting job to another running back. Bettis said he faked the timing of an injury so the team could not cut him. "The thing is, I wasn't faking that I had an injury. I was just faking that the injury happened on that short-yardage play. I had to fool the coaches and the team's medical department into thinking the injury had occurred on that play. Otherwise, the Steelers would have had their reason to cut me and my salary," Bettis wrote in his book.
Tue, 28 Nov 2006 14:57:51 -0800 The Associated Press reports the father of former Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jerome Bettis died of a heart attack Tuesday, Nov. 28. He was 61. Johnnie Bettis reportedly suffered a heart attack while driving in a suburb north of Detroit, according to police officials.
