Phillies | Andrew Bailey recalled to big club

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 12:48:34 -0700

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Phillies RP Andrew Bailey was officially recalled from Class AAA Lehigh Valley Wednesday, April 20. In a corresponding move, RP James Russell was designated for assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Reiterating a previous tip, Bailey has a long road ahead for save opportunities, and he isn't a roster priority outside of the deepest leagues. He'll likely pitch in low-leverage situations starting out, too. Still, the Philadelphia bullpen has already seen three closers, so there could be potential for ninth-inning duty down the road.

Phillies | Andrew Bailey coming up for Phils?

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 12:26:19 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Andrew Bailey is expected to be called up from the minors to replace RP James Russell, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey was speculated to be a front-runner for saves near the end of spring training, but that didn't turn out to be the case. Instead, Jeanmar Gomez has seized the role for now after blowups by David Hernandez and Dalier Hinojosa. Bailey isn't guaranteed to be in high-leverage situations right off the bat, but he's another name to watch in case Gomez struggles eventually. Speculate on Bailey only in the deepest of leagues if you're desperate for saves.

Phillies | Andrew Bailey demoted

Sat, 02 Apr 2016 11:23:06 -0700

The Philadelphia Phillies have optioned RP Andrew Bailey to Class AAA Lehigh Valley.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey had been in the running for the closer's job but struggled during the final weeks of spring training and experienced a noticeable dip in velocity. He went 2-1 with a 5.63 ERA in eight Grapefruit League games, allowing five runs on 10 hits over eight innings, with no walks and seven strikeouts. If he's not promoted to the parent club by May 1, Bailey can opt out of his contract and become a free agent.

Phillies | Andrew Bailey winning closer battle?

Thu, 17 Mar 2016 14:04:07 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Andrew Bailey could be the frontrunner to win the closer job.

"Bailey has done it before, so just talking about it, I would lean more towards looking at him as the guy, only because he's done it before and had success," pitching coach Bob McClure said. "But it could change. It could change. I'm kind of up in the air on it a little bit."

Fantasy Tip: Bailey saved 75 games from 2009-2011, but he has only pitched 52 2/3 innings since and missed the entire 2014 campaign. He is a late-round option as a No. 3/4 reliever or for owners who avoid closers early in drafts, but Bailey is far from a sure thing.

Phillies | Philly won't use closer-by-committee

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 14:53:18 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said the team won't use a closer-by-committee. RP Andrew Bailey has impressed the coaching staff, and he may be leapfrogging RP David Hernandez (elbow) as the favorite this spring. "I feel like I'm ready to rock this year," Bailey said. "I've put the time in, and everything is healthy. It's all good." Bailey hasn't walked a batter all spring, but his fastball velocity has been in the low-90s.

Fantasy Tip: Right now it looks like Bailey has the leg up in the competition, but if he starts the year as the closer, his hold on the spot will be tenuous. Consider both Bailey and Hernandez your third or fourth fantasy closers as late-round flyers.

Phillies | Andrew Bailey in the lead?

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 08:56:50 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Andrew Bailey may be in the lead of the closer battle with RP David Hernandez (elbow), who recently returned to the mound Tuesday, March 15. Hernandez entered camp the favorite to be the closer, but he felt discomfort in his right elbow last month during the first week of full-squad workouts. Hernandez said he feels better than he has since camp opened.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey will have to stave off Edward Mujica along with Hernandez, and the winner will likely be an RP3 in fantasy. Hernandez is still worth the speculative, final-round flyer.
