Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (thumb) will wear a soft cast for the next 10-14 days, and then he will wear a brace after that. He isn't sure of a timetable for when he will resume throwing, but he's optimistic he will pitch again this season. "The doctor said the surgery went well and we didn't have to reconstruct anything, it was the ligament that was already in there, so that's a good sign," Bailey said.

Red Sox | Andrew Bailey to have thumb surgery

Tue, 03 Apr 2012 15:26:01 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (thumb) will undergo surgery Wednesday, April 4, to fix the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb. There is currently no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Bailey will be out for at least three months; it wouldn't be a surprise if he's out longer given his nature as a slow healer. Mark Melancon is the favorite to be tabbed as Bobby Valentine as the main man in the ninth, but don't rule out Alfredo Aceves racking up some saves. The BoSox want to keep the hard-throwing Daniel Bard in the rotation, for now, so target Melancon in mixed leagues first. Aceves belongs on AL rosters, at least.
