Mon, 03 Sep 2001 21:29:02 -0700

The Post Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher told QB Tommy Maddox yesterday that he would back up Kordell Stewart in the regular-season opener at Jacksonville on Sunday. Maddox is more suited to a classical, drop-back style of play than either Stewart or Martin.

Steelers | QB Notes

Sat, 01 Sep 2001 08:51:10 -0700

The Post Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher confirmed QB Kent Graham will be traded or released before tomorrow's roster cutdown deadline. His release could suprisingly open the No. 2 QB spot for Tommy Maddox, not Tee Martin as many expected. "Right now, I'm not ready to make that statement," Cowher said yesterday, acknowledging it's possible. The Steelers are trying to find a team that might be interested in Graham's services. Cincinnati, who just lost Scott Mitchell for six weeks, could possibly have some interest.

Steelers | 20-0 Winners Over Bills

Fri, 31 Aug 2001 03:23:46 -0700

The Associated Press reports the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Buffalo Bills 20-0 Thursday night. The defense has only allowed seven points in their last two games. The Steelers offense settled for FGs after several long drives, just as it did against Detroit. QB Kordell Stewart looks much more comfortable and confident in new coordinator Mike Mularkey's streamlined offense than he did a year ago in Kevin Gilbride's system. Backup QB Kent Graham appears on his way out. He looks like he is almost certain to be cut as Tee Martin, who played the final three quarters, and Tommy Maddox back up Stewart. Bills PK Steve Christie missed field goal attempts of 22 and 40 yards. He missed seven of 11 during the pre-season, and his job could be in jeopardy.

The Post Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers CB DeShea Townsend appeared to have injured his foot at the end of practice today. He went down after WR Troy Edwards caught a pass over him. He had ice on the foot after practice, but he was not allowed to comment on the injury. Coach Bill Cowher said CB DeWayne Washington (concussion) is doubtful for the Detroit game. QB Kordell Stewart had ice around his right calf after practice. DE Chris Sullivan (left forearm) was going to see a doctor before leaving the team's practice facility. QB Tee Martin is not coming back until Thursday as he is attending his grandmother's funeral.

The Tribune-Review reports Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher plans to play QB Kordell Stewart most of the first half during Thursday's pre-season game. He will be followed, in order, by Tee Martin, Tommy Maddox and Kent Graham. Cowher liked what Martin and Maddox did in the opener in Atlanta, but he wants to see more on a consistent basis.

Sat, 04 Aug 2001 06:44:11 -0700

Jerry DiPaola reports for the Tribune-Review the Pittsburgh Steelers top two QBs, Kordell Stewart and Kent Graham, struggled in last night's pre-season game while Tommy Maddox and Tee Martin looked good in the second half. "I thought Tommy Maddox probably was the most effective guy out there tonight. And I thought Tee did good things when he came in," said coach Bill Cowher. Stewart admitted he was not sharp.

Steelers | Battle For No. 2 QB - Graham Leads

Sun, 29 Jul 2001 21:32:37 -0700

The Post Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers QB Kent Graham is the early leader over Tee Martin for the team's No. 2 QB spot. Graham has been one of the early stars of training camp, looking like a QB contending for the No. 1 spot, which he isn't, instead of a QB trying to hold on to the position he held at the end of last season. "He's looked very good," offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey said of Graham. The veteran also knows he could be released for salary cap reasons if he loses the battle for No. 2.

Steelers | Backup Battle Wide Open

Tue, 17 Jul 2001 21:56:18 -0700

The Tribune-Review reports Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher called the battle for the backup quarterback job "wide open." Veteran QB Kent Graham enters camp as the No. 2 QB, but second-year player Tee Martin will be given every opportunity to win the job. Tommy Maddox, "is going to have a little bit of catch-up to do," Cowher said.

Steelers | Battle at Backup QB

Fri, 15 Jun 2001 15:24:39 -0700

Gerry Dulac, of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, reports for the Sporting News that the fate of the QBs in Pittsburgh this year depends a lot on QB Tee Martin. If Martin is developed enough to be the No. 2 QB, Kent Graham would likely be released and Tommy Maddox would make the team as the No. 3 QB. Should Martin not be at that point yet and Graham holds onto the No. 2 job, Maddox would have a short stay in Pittsburgh. It's all expected to play out in training camp.

Steelers | QB Notes

Mon, 30 Apr 2001 01:17:39 -0700

The Tribune-Review reports Pittsburgh Steelers QB Kordell Stewart, who returned to mini-camp practice on Sunday, seems firmly entrenched as the team's starting QB. What is not so certain is the No. 2 and No. 3 roles for the team. QB Kent Graham carries a $1.9 million salary-cap value for this season and some wonder about his future with the team at that price. There are also concerns about Tee Martin's ability to step in now as the No. 2 QB. The team looks like it no longer wants to add a veteran QB like Trent Dilfer before training camp. They currently plan to go to training camp with Stewart, Graham, Martin and undrafted rookie John Turman.

Steelers | Mini-camp Notes

Sun, 29 Apr 2001 00:33:35 -0700

The Post-Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers QBs Tee Martin and rookie free agent John Turman did all of the throwing in mini-camp today. Backup QB Kent Graham (shoulder) is still not throwing and Kordell Stewart had an excused absence to be an instructor at a youth football camp in Florida conducted by teammate Wayne Gandy. 5 foot 7, 173 pound undrafted free agent KR/PR Joey Getherall of Notre Dame continued to make his bid to make the Steelers roster. He can also play WR. "I'm going out there as a receiver to catch the ball and show them what I can do," Getherall said. Another undrafted player being noticed is WR Tim Baker. RB Amos Zereoue hopes the pending departure of RB Richard Huntley clears some playing time for him.

Steelers | Add Two

Sun, 22 Apr 2001 22:14:36 -0700

According to their official site, the Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms with two undrafted free agents, QB John Turman from the University of Pittsburgh and DE/LB Justin Kurpeikis from Penn State. Tuman is expected to compete with Kent Graham and Tee Martin for the second and third quarterback spots on the roster.

Steelers | More On Mitchell

Thu, 19 Apr 2001 00:19:08 -0700

The Post Gazette reports, as an update to a previous story, free agent QB Scott Mitchell appears to be at the top of the list of candidates to join the Pittsburgh Steelers roster. If signed, he could replace current No. 2 QB Kent Graham. The Steelers have discussed other veteran free agent quarterbacks but decided only to invite Mitchell for a visit. Tony Agnone, Mitchell's agent, said he will wait until after he talks with Mitchell to begin negotiations with the Steelers. Reportedly, the Redskins are also interested in Mitchell. QB Kordell Stewart is the clear No. 1, and Tee Martin will push for the backup job. Whether or not Martin wins that job, there appears to be room for only one veteran backup, Mitchell or Graham.

Steelers | Mitchell Visits

Wed, 18 Apr 2001 22:12:32 -0700

According to the team's official site, the Pittsburgh Steelers had free agent QB Scott Mitchell (Bengals) in for a visit on Wednesday. The Steelers would look for Mitchell to compete with current Pittsburgh QBs Kent Graham and Tee Martin for the backup quarterback spot behind Kordell Stewart. They won't be in any hurry to sign the veteran if the price isn't just right, however. No contract was offered to Mitchell as of Wednesday afternoon.

Steelers | Checked On Dilfer

Wed, 18 Apr 2001 01:11:13 -0700

The Tribune-Review reports the Pittsburgh Steelers checked into the possibility of signing free agent QB Trent Dilfer as a backup QB, but team officials did not get a positive response. As previously reported, coach Bill Cowher wants to add a fourth QB to the team's roster to join QBs Kordell Stewart, Kent Graham and Tee Martin. He added that the new quarterback won't necessarily come from the draft.
