Angels | Joe Smith earns another save

Mon, 23 May 2016 21:42:22 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Texas Rangers Monday, May 23, to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Smith bounced back after he allowed three runs Saturday, May 21. Smith will continue to serve as the closer for now but likely will lose the job when Huston Street returns from the disabled list. Smith will still have some value in leagues that use holds.

Angels | Fernando Salas fills in for save

Mon, 16 May 2016 23:24:02 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Fernando Salas recorded his second save of the season Monday, May 16, in place of RP Joe Smith.

Fantasy Tip: Smith pitched the last three days and four of the last five. He'll likely be out there for the next save chance until Huston Street returns. Salas' value is limited to the deepest formats.

Angels | Joe Smith tagged with loss

Sun, 08 May 2016 06:27:31 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith allowed three base runners before surrendering a game-winning, two-run single in the ninth inning during the Angels' 4-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday, May 7.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners looking to cash in on Smith's fleeting value boost while Huston Street is out were burned Saturday. Smith has handled the closer role in the past, but he owns a mediocre pitch repertoire. Unless you're begging for saves, you can leave Smith on the waiver wire.

Angels | Huston Street headed to DL

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 05:00:20 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Huston Street (oblique) is expected to be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique. RP Joe Smith recorded the save in Street's absence Wednesday, April 27.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has been a serviceable fill-in before. Pick him up in most formats and stash Street on the DL.

Angels | Joe Smith has new pitch

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 13:50:23 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith has developed a changeup this spring, a pitch he hasn't thrown since 2010. Left-handers hit .288 against Smith last year, and he held them to a .227 average or worse in all prior seasons in which he faced at least 75 lefties.

Fantasy Tip: This is notable, since Smith has been a reliable eighth-inning setup man for the Angels the past few seasons, and Huston Street, who is safe as the closer, has a history of nagging injuries that cost him time. Smith isn't a bad late-round target in cavernous mixed and AL leagues as Street's handcuff.

Angels | Joe Smith available Wednesday

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 12:50:12 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith (ankle) is available to pitch Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Fantasy Tip: While it's not a guarantee that Smith will be closing immediately, he gives them the best option late in games to secure a win with Huston Street (groin) out for the rest of the regular season. Smith should be added already if you're still looking for a few more saves to push you over the top.

Angels | Joe Smith could pitch tomorrow

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 15:33:15 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith (ankle) felt good after a bullpen session Tuesday, Sept. 29, and is expecting to be available to pitch Wednesday, Sept. 30. He's been dealing with a sprained left ankle.

Fantasy Tip: As long as Smith is available, he'll be the likely closer for the Halos with Huston Street (groin) unlikely to appear again in the regular season. If you're still chasing saves this late, Smith could carry you to the top.

Angels | Joe Smith confident he'll return

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 09:52:06 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith (ankle) plans to throw off the mound Tuesday, Sept. 29, and he is confident he will be able to return before the end of the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Smith could receive a shot to grab a save or two down the stretch, but he remains nothing more than a desperation own in the majority of seasonal leagues. Continue to check back for updates and for an exact return date.

Angels | Joe Smith working his way back

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 15:43:43 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith (ankle) did some fielding practice Monday, Sept. 28, and will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Sept. 29. Smith is hoping to return by the weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Huston Street (groin) is likely out until a possible postseason berth, so Smith could serve as the Angels closer sometime this weekend. But with his availability in question, you may only have him available for one save opportunity. Trevor Gott or Fernando Salas could be used in the ninth in the meantime this week.

Angels | Pitching injuries mounting for Angels

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 15:25:53 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SPs Jered Weaver (shoulder) and Matt Shoemaker (forearm) and RPs Huston Street (groin) and Joe Smith (ankle) are all nursing injuries.

Fantasy Tip: The Angels signed free-agent Mat Latos, but his role will be fluid and largely depend on the status of Weaver ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) and Shoemaker ($5,600, 11.2% of cap). Street will not pitch again during the regular season, and Smith is questionable. The closing duties are expected to be split up, too, so there isn't a lot of value chasing saves from the Los Angeles bullpen. Stay tuned for updates on Shoemaker and Weaver.
