Cleveland Indians RP Joe Smith had a breakout season in 2011 as the sixth-inning reliever, and he looks to stay on a roll heading into 2012. Working in the sixth inning typically comes with more freedom to face both right-handed and left-handed hitters. "Honestly, I don't want to be a specialist," Smith said. "I want to be an inning guy. Now, whether that works out, it is what it is, but that's my ultimate goal."

The Cleveland Indians avoided arbitration with SP Justin Masterson and RPs Chris Perez and Joe Smith by signing them to one-year deals Tuesday, Jan. 17. Masterson will make $3.825 million and Perez will earn $4.5 million. Financial terms weren't disclosed for Smith.

The Cleveland Indians tendered all seven arbitration-eligible players before the deadline. SS Asdrubal Cabrera, OF Shin-Soo Choo, SP Justin Masterson, CL Chris Perez, 3B Jack Hannahan, RP Joe Smith and RP Rafael Perez were tendered contracts.

Cleveland Indians RP Joe Smith (abdomen), activated from the 15-day disabled list earlier Friday, April 15, allowed a run and three hits in the ninth inning against the Baltimore Orioles, reports Dennis Manoloff, of The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Smith was able to throw 15 of his 19 pitches for strikes.
