Mets | Mets monitoring certain relievers

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 11:51:13 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Jeremy Jeffress, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith and Atlanta Braves RP Chris Withrow are among the bullpen options being monitored by the New York Mets ahead of the trade deadline. The club views adding another reliever as being "more easily attainable" as opposed to a starting pitcher.

Fantasy Tip: It would be a boost for each Withrow and Smith if one were to land on the Mets, at least in leagues that score holds, as both would get more opportunities at such compared to their current employers. Jeffress, however, would receive a huge downgrade, as he would no longer be closing like he does for Milwaukee, and effectively so in that role.

Angels | Joe Smith likely to be dealt

Sun, 10 Jul 2016 23:37:49 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith will likely be dealt by the deadline.

Fantasy Tip: Several teams definitely have an eye on Smith as a closing candidate, so definitely stay tuned to see where he lands. He's had some closing experience while Huston Street has been injured on occasions, so Smith definitely knows the ins and outs.

Angels | Joe Smith could be traded

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 17:07:23 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith could be moved to another club before the trade deadline because he is in the final season of a three-year, $15.75 million contract.

Fantasy Tip: The 32-year-old right-hander is 1-3 with a 3.91 ERA and six saves in 25 appearances this season, with 17 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings. Although he's likely to be used in low-leverage situations for the immediate future after being activated from the disabled list, he would likely return to a setup role if a contender acquires him. For now, he should be owned in AL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues.

Angels | Joe Smith being eased in

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 14:22:54 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith is unlikely to resume his role as the eighth-inning setup man for RP Huston Street, at least not initially after returning from the disabled list. RP Cam Bedrosian and a combination of other pitchers could serve in the eighth-inning role.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has been a pretty reliable late-inning reliever and can help stabilize ratios in deeper leagues, but his appeal isn't strong outside of the deepest of AL-leagues as a handcuff to Street. Street is a very shaky fantasy closer with a 5.28 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and only 5.3 K's per nine innings. Those speculating for saves in deeper leagues should look Bedrosian's way, as he's been very good and would profile nicely in the ninth if the Angels change course.

Angels | Joe Smith activated from DL

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 13:06:27 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith (hamstring) was activated from the disabled list Friday, July 1. In a corresponding move, RP Mike Morin was optioned to the minors.

Fantasy Tip: Smith is worth a speculative add for fantasy owners chasing saves, or at worst, he's a player to watch. Current closer Huston Street has allowed eight runs over his past 4 1/3 innings and has blown two of his past three save opportunities. It's a situation to watch.

Angels | Joe Smith set for rehab assignment

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 06:45:14 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Class A Inland Empire Sunday, June 26.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has proven to be a low-end closer when provided the opportunity, and Huston Street has blown two of his past three save chances and allowed three runs through 2 2/3 innings in the process. Smith is a low priority in the majority of seasonal leagues, but he could find himself back in the ninth inning at some point this season, so keep an eye on the bullpen in Los Angeles.

Angels | Joe Smith to throw soon

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 19:14:09 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith (hamstring) is expected to throw a bullpen session in the next day or two.

Fantasy Tip: When healthy, Smith is best used in deeper AL-only rotisserie formats for help in the ERA and WHIP categories, and those advanced formats which reward holds.

Angels | Joe Smith to DL

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 13:30:11 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring injury. In other corresponding moves, RP Javy Guerra was designated for assignment, and SP David Huff and RP Mike Morin were called up from Class AAA Salt Lake.

Fantasy Tip: If Huston Street weren't back already this might have been a disaster for the Angels, but Street is back and healthy so Smith lost much of his fantasy value at that point. File Smith away on your disabled list accordingly but keep him handy for later in the year in case Street gets hurt again.

Angels | Joe Smith unavailable vs. Yankees

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 14:13:38 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith (hamstring) is not available to pitch against the New York Yankees Monday, June 6, because of a hamstring injury. The team will decide if Smith will require a stint on the disabled list Tuesday, June 7.

Fantasy Tip: With Huston Street back, Smith has extremely limited fantasy value. Smith owns an unimpressive 3.67 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 7.3 K/9 over the past two seasons. However, he has shown competent as a closer, so when in the role, he has fantasy value. It is likely safe to drop Smith now, though.

Angels | Joe Smith earns another save

Mon, 23 May 2016 21:42:22 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Texas Rangers Monday, May 23, to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Smith bounced back after he allowed three runs Saturday, May 21. Smith will continue to serve as the closer for now but likely will lose the job when Huston Street returns from the disabled list. Smith will still have some value in leagues that use holds.
