"He's throwing the ball smoother, with less effort, and his mechanics have improved," manager Lou Piniella said. "He looks like a major league pitcher on the mound. He's got natural talent. It's just a question of refining it. We're going to let this guy pitch and around the 20th of March, we'll see exactly where he's at." He admits that he worked on his curveball while playing in the Mexican Winter League. "I thought I made some good adjustments and worked on the curveball a little bit. I made the pitch more what fits my style better. Instead of trying to throw a big (12-to-6) curveball, I wanted to come out with an aggressive curveball that gets guys swinging," Samardzija said. He finished winter ball 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA with eight walks in 24 innings. Cubs | Samardzija to play winter ball Carrie Muskat, of MLB.com, reports Chicago Cubs SP Jeff Samardzija will pitch in the Mexican Winter League this offseason. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild recently made an adjustment to Samardzija's delivery. "In this league, you don't want anything flat," Samardzija said. "These guys are good and they'll jump on any mistake. We made a couple adjustments to get on top of the ball and get a better angle to the plate. It's helped my changeup tremendously." SP Jeff Samardzija will throw Thursday, Oct. 1, against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and SP Tom Gorzelanny has been moved to Friday, Oct. 2. Cubs | Rotation set for remainder of season The Chicago Sun-Times reports the Chicago Cubs have set their rotation for the remainder of the 2009 season. SP Carlos Zambrano, SP Tom Gorzelanny and SP Randy Wells will finish out the series this weekend against the San Francisco Giants Friday, Sept. 25, through Sunday, Sept. 27. SP Ryan Dempster will start Tuesday, Sept. 29, against the Pittsburgh Pirates, with SP Ted Lilly and Zambrano starting the doubleheader Wednesday, Sept. 30, and Gorzelanny going in the series finale Thursday, Oct. 1. In the Oct. 2-4 series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, SP Jeff Samardzija, Wells and Dempster will start in order. Cubs | Samardzija homers for first major league hit The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports Chicago Cubs RP Jeff Samardzija homered in the sixth inning Wednesday, Sept. 23, to pick up his first major league hit. He became the first Cub to have his first hit be a home run since 1B Hee Seop Choi in September 2002.
