His record fell to 3-4 with a 6.14 ERA. "Some of it might be just him trying too hard, working too hard in between starts," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "He did so well for a while, and then he had one or two bad ones. I'm from the belief that we have to slow him down a little bit as far as maybe giving him a little rest."

ESPN.com's Joe Schad reports the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a five-year deal worth up to $7.25 million with pitcher Jeff Samardzija (Notre Dame). Samardzija is also a star wide receiver for the Fighting Irish football squad. The Cubs selected him in the fifth round of the First Year Player Draft. The deal must first be approved by the commissioner's office, and then the two-sport star will join the Boise Hawks in the Northwest League. He'll be able to play college football this fall and could be a first-round pick in the next NFL draft. He went 8-2 with a 4.33 ERA in 15 starts for the baseball team.
