Chicago Cubs SP Jeff Samardzija's agent, Mark Rogers, said there is nothing to report in terms of extension talks between his client and the team. However, both sides are expected to re-evaluate their positions on a long-term deal after the 2013 season. The two sides had preliminary talks about a three-year deal in the fall of 2012, but both sides agreed to table discussions for the future. Samardzija is currently under club control until after the 2015 season.

Fantasy Tip: Levine suggests that the Cubs probably won't be able to realistically compete again until 2014, when many of their up-and-coming arms will be major league-ready. Signing Samardzija to a long-term extension appears imminent, especially since Edwin Jackson is the only other starter on the team that is locked up.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said when SP Matt Garza (lat) returns from the disabled list, the team will not use a six-man rotation. He added that SPs Jeff Samardzija, Edwin Jackson and Travis Wood won't be moved to the bullpen.

Chicago Cubs SP Jeff Samardzija (1-5) lost his fifth consecutive game Friday, May 10, against the Washington Nationals. In his shortest outing of the season, he allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits over five innings, with two walks and five strikeouts. He has not won since Opening Day.

Chicago Cubs SP Jeff Samardzija (hand) suffered a cut on his pitching hand Wednesday, April 24, against the Cincinnati Reds in the first inning trying to field a bouncer in the first inning. The cut healed and he was able to continue.

Chicago Cubs SP Carlos Villanueva was expected to start Wednesday, April 17, against the Texas Rangers, but that game was postponed due to rain. Rather than skipping his turn, everyone has been pushed back a day. Villanueva will now start the series finale against the Texas Rangers Thursday, April 18, with SP Jeff Samardzija pushed back one day to Friday, April 19, for the series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Talks between the Chicago Cubs and SP Jeff Samardzija regarding a contract extension appear to be on hold, with the two sides being far apart. The team's most recent offer was reportedly "well above" the nearly $30 million, five-year deal that Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland received last spring. "He really wants to be here, and we really want to keep him, so I'm not worried about it," team president Theo Epstein said.

Chicago Cubs SP Jeff Samardzija could start on opening day because SP Matt Garza (lat) may not have enough time to recover from his lat injury to be ready for the start of the season. Manager Dale Sveum said he does not expect to name an opening day starter for a few more weeks and indicated SP Edwin Jackson could also be an option.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum was impressed with SP Jeff Samardzija's bullpen session Wednesday, Feb. 13. "You would have thought it was playoff time," Sveum said. "That was probably as dominating of a bullpen that you're going to see. It was pretty impressive to watch him throw those 30 pitches or whatever he threw today."
