Chicago Cubs SP Jeff Samardzija's agent, Mark Rogers, said there is nothing to report in terms of extension talks between his client and the team. However, both sides are expected to re-evaluate their positions on a long-term deal after the 2013 season. The two sides had preliminary talks about a three-year deal in the fall of 2012, but both sides agreed to table discussions for the future. Samardzija is currently under club control until after the 2015 season.
Fantasy Tip: Levine suggests that the Cubs probably won't be able to realistically compete again until 2014, when many of their up-and-coming arms will be major league-ready. Signing Samardzija to a long-term extension appears imminent, especially since Edwin Jackson is the only other starter on the team that is locked up.

Chicago Cubs SP Carlos Villanueva was expected to start Wednesday, April 17, against the Texas Rangers, but that game was postponed due to rain. Talks between the Chicago Cubs and SP Jeff Samardzija regarding a contract extension appear to be on hold, with the two sides being far apart. The team's most recent offer was reportedly "well above" the nearly $30 million, five-year deal that Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland received last spring. "He really wants to be here, and we really want to keep him, so I'm not worried about it," team president Theo Epstein said.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum was impressed with SP Jeff Samardzija's bullpen session Wednesday, Feb. 13. "You would have thought it was playoff time," Sveum said.
