Chicago Cubs RP Jeff Samardzija credits much of his recent success to an improved slider - a pitch that he is using more often than in previous years. This year, 28.9 percent of the pitches he has thrown have been sliders, compared to his previous career high of 17.2 percent in 2010. Samardzija's four-seamed fastball has also gained velocity as the season has progressed. In the first 2 1/2 months of the year, it was regularly clocked between 93 and 95 mph, but since then, it has reached 96 to 98 mph on a regular basis.
