"I have absolutely zero regrets. I had a great time here. My family loved it. I got a few rings. I respect Bill (Belichick). I respect Scott (Pioli). I respect the Krafts. It was a great time. Before I got here, I never realized that coaches actually won games. Now I know I probably should have won more at the other teams I played for," Miller said.

Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots P Josh Miller appears frustrated by the way the team's punting competition is unfolding. Miller was held out of the team's preseason opener. Miller was asked how he would assess his performance in camp. "It's been OK," Miller said. "I'm happy. I'd rather get a chance to do it in a game, but as far as being ready to play, I'm ready to play. I have no answers. I don't know when I'll be in there. All I know is that I'm healthy and ready to go. That's all I got."

Teammates told him that a blocking breakdown caused the punt, not allowing Miller to have much time to get the ball off. "That time of the game, when they've got to make a play, you've got to get the ball off much quicker than that. I take that on myself; that's on me," Miller said.

"I was working with a trainer, using a program I carried over from here with (strength and conditioning coach) Mike Woicik," said Miller, who played at the 235-pound mark last season. "It included a lot of diet, a lot of running, a lot of fast stuff. A lot of the weight workouts I did were speed related. I got a little faster, quicker, and I feel like my hang time got a lot better for coverage. I feel better and I'm kicking better."

Michael Felger, of Patriots.com, reports the New England Patriots PK Adam Vinatieri (back), who suffered his worst season statistically in 2003, will be spelled during training camp by rookie P Cody Scates and P Josh Miller to reduce the wear and tear on the veteran kicker's body. After suffering a back injury late in the year, Vinatieri feels completely healthy and focused on having a great season. "It feels pretty good. We've done some things to strengthen it,'' Vinatieri said. "I'm not old (31). But I am getting older. When you get on in years you realize you can't continue to do things the same way. Hopefully having those guys (handle kickoffs in practice) will take some of the strain off. Then I can just focus on the field goals and get those numbers up.''

"The get-offs were what they need to be in the game," said Miller. "I'm getting pretty good pop on the ball, with a 4.7 hang time and 45-50 yards."

Updating previous reports, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers P Josh Miller (knee) wants to punt in the Steelers' first exhibition game Aug. 9 in Detroit. Miller's knee was injured while he was punting on his own two weeks before training camp opened, and surgery resulted. He has been punting on the side with no pain. Steelers head coach Bill Cowher said it will probably be Monday, August 4, before he activates Miller.
