Chiefs | Cunningham hopes Bell will make plays

Wed, 07 Jun 2006 13:15:18 -0700

Bob Gretz, of KCChiefs.com, reports Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham says LB Kendrell Bell knows the team will need some big plays from his in 2006 after underachieving last season. "The thing about Kendrell was he came from another system and he came off an injury and it was obviously bothering him," Cunningham said. "The problem with him is he won't come out of games, he won't let the trainer know what's happening and he doesn't want anybody to think he's not a tough guy. And it's tough to come to a new organization and learn a new system. It's tough for a player; it's tough for a coach. He's playing a new position for him at the right outside linebacker spot in a 4-3 defense, not the 3-4 that he played in Pittsburgh. People don't want to talk about that."

Sun, 21 Aug 2005 20:16:31 -0700

Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports the Kansas City Chiefs are taking a cautious approach with LB Kendrell Bell. Two preseason games have passed and Bell has been nowhere on the field. The fans are wondering if Bell's hard-luck injuries have followed him to Kansas City. "I'm fine," Bell said. "I'm out here practicing. They should come out here and watch me practice. Then they can make a decision." This week Bell is expected to participate in full-contact drills, the last step before he plays in a preseason game. He was a regular for two-a-days during training camp, but head coach Dick Vermeil has held from contact. The reasons varied. Vermeil said it was to rest the shoulder that nagged him in Pittsburgh. President/general manager Carl Peterson hinted that the Chiefs also want to be careful because of a groin injury that kept Bell out for most of the 2004 season.

Tue, 28 Jun 2005 09:57:14 -0700

Richard Thomas, of the Texarkana Gazette, reports Kansas City Chiefs CB Eric Warfield said he likes the acquisitions the Chiefs have made on defense this past offseason. "I feel very good about the team bringing in (LB) Kendrell Bell, (DE) Carlos Hall, (SS) Sammy Knight, (CB Patrick) Surtain (cornerback), and for drafting (LB) Derrick Johnson from Texas. I know every other team has made upgrades to their team, but I like our chances. "I mean when you've got the No. 1 offense, that means you're always going to put points on the board. But whenever you can go out there with a strong defense, it helps you that much more to know that you can go out and stop high-caliber teams like New England."
