The Detroit Tigers avoided arbitration with OF Austin Jackson, SP Doug Fister and C Alex Avila Friday, Jan. 18, by agreeing to one-year deals with each. Fister will make $4 million, Jackson will earn $3.5 million and Avila will receive $2.95 million this year.

Updating previous reports, Detroit Tigers SP Doug Fister (head) is scheduled to start Game 6 of the World Series against the San Francisco Giants Wednesday, Oct. 31, if necessary. He was checked out Friday, Oct. 26, as well as Saturday, Oct. 27, and passed both tests without any problems. "He never had a headache, never had any dizziness," trainer Kevin Rand said. "Nothing. All he had was an abrasion on the scalp."

Major League Baseball is looking at ways to protect pitchers from being injured by batted balls such as the one that struck Detroit Tigers SP Doug Fister in the head, and the league said liners are a possibility in the minors next year. The safety issue is on a "fast track," MLB senior vice president Dan Halem said Friday night. "Hopefully, we can come up with something. We're making progress."
