Astros | Doug Fister walks the park

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 23:52:08 -0700

Houston Astros SP Doug Fister walked a career-high seven batters in his loss to the Seattle Mariners Monday, April 25.

Fantasy Tip: Fister is 1-3 with a 5.56 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP and 11 K's in 22 2/3 innings. He could be in danger of losing his rotation spot, especially with Lance McCullers (shoulder) not too far from a return. Fister is only worth keeping in AL-only leagues.

Astros | Doug Fister to pitch in Milwaukee

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 18:59:58 -0700

Houston Astros SP Doug Fister is tentatively scheduled to pitch in one of the regular season games in Milwaukee for the series starting Friday, April 8. It hasn't been determined, but he will be either the No. 4 or 5 starter.

Fantasy Tip: Fister will face a Milwaukee team that is expected to be one of the worst in the National League, so he could get off to a hot start for his AL-only fantasy owners and DFS players.

Astros | Doug Fister's velocity down

Thu, 03 Mar 2016 12:11:44 -0800

Houston Astros SP Doug Fister's velocity has dropped in recent years, and a forearm injury while with the Washington Nationals last year banished him to the bullpen. "Trying to rush," Fister said. "You know, the body's an amazing thing. It makes up for a lack of this and a lack of that. Something else picks up for it. … I wasn't staying back; I wasn't staying tall. Next thing you know, my arm's compensating."

Fantasy Tip: Fister never really relied much on velocity anyway, as he's more of a ground-ball pitcher that relies on finding contact. He also showed less control last year, though, which coupled with a move to hitter-friendly Minute Maid Park, could be a recipe for disaster if he earns a spot in the rotation.

Astros | Houston's rotation competition

Thu, 03 Mar 2016 12:08:33 -0800

Houston Astros SPs Mike Fiers, Scott Feldman and Doug Fister are competing for the final two rotation spots this spring. Feldman and Fister are making a combined $15 million this year, which might make Fiers the odd-man out, even after he threw a no-hitter in 2015. Feldman's sprained right shoulder ended his 2015 season, but he said he's feeling better than ever this year.

Fantasy Tip: Fister's drop in velocity and inability to continue to induce plenty of ground balls hurts his fantasy value heading into 2016 in a much more dangerous hitter's park. Feldman's injuries make him even more of a risk. Fiers has the most upside of the bunch and is a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues for his strikeout abilities.

Astros | Doug Fister a risky addition

Sat, 30 Jan 2016 08:06:30 -0800

Houston Astros SP Doug Fister was a risky signing for the team because of his MRI, but the team is confident that Fister will be healthy this season, according to general manager Jeff Luhnow.

Fantasy Tip: Fister likely will be in the middle of the team's starting rotation this season if he is healthy. Fister has had success in the past and could be a late-round option in deeper leagues, but owners should not be counting on him this season.

Astros | Doug Fister slots in at No. 4

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 10:21:40 -0800

Updating earlier reports, Houston Astros SP Doug Fister will slot in as the team's fourth starter.

Fantasy Tip: Fister is worth a flyer as an SP4 or SP5, but his steep velocity drop is concerning. Don't overvalue him because of his productive past.

Updating an earlier report, Houston Astros SP Doug Fister agreed to a one-year, $7 million deal with performance bonuses that could land him $12 million total.

Astros | Doug Fister agrees with Houston

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 09:06:07 -0800

Free-agent SP Doug Fister (Nationals) agreed to a one-year deal with the Houston Astros Thursday, Jan. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Fister has experienced a steep velocity drop, and the ballpark doesn't suit him very well. He's still worth a flyer as an SP4 or SP5 considering how good he has been in the past.

Astros | Doug Fister an option for Houston?

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 11:33:44 -0800

Free-agent SP Doug Fister (Nationals) could be an option for the Houston Astros since the team has considered signing him to fill out their starting rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Fister likely will receive a short-term deal from a team in the near future and should be in a starting rotation in 2016. Fister posted a disappointing 4.19 ERA last season with only 63 strikeouts but could be a late-round option in deeper leagues depending on his new team.

Orioles | Baltimore hesitant on pitchers

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 08:43:57 -0800

The Baltimore Orioles do not want to give up a first-round pick in order to sign free-agent SP Yovani Gallardo (Rangers), according to general manager Dan Duquette. They also haven't made an offer to free-agent SP Doug Fister (Nationals) and don't think free-agent SP Cliff Lee (elbow) is ready to pitch.

Fantasy Tip: Fister is probably the the most intriguing pitcher of the three because of his heavy ground-ball profile as depth for your deep mixed rotation, but a move to the hitter-friendly environment of Camden Yards would kill a lot of optimism.
