Royals | Ian Kennedy can opt out of deal

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 17:05:28 -0800

Updating previous reports, Kansas City Royals SP Ian Kennedy's five-year, $70 million contract allows him to opt out after his second season. He would receive $6 million if he chooses to opt out.

Fantasy Tip: Although Kennedy went 9-15 with a 4.28 ERA in 30 starts for the San Diego Padres last year, his command improved as the season progressed and he struck out a career-high 9.30 batters per nine innings. He's worth considering as a middle-of-the-rotation starter in AL-only leagues and a late-round option for deep mixed leagues.

Royals | Kansas City adds Ian Kennedy

Sat, 16 Jan 2016 06:43:44 -0800

Free-agent SP Ian Kennedy (Padres) has agreed to terms with the Kansas City Royals on a five-year deal worth $70 million.

Fantasy Tip: Kennedy likely will be in the middle of the starting rotation for the Royals this season. He posted a 9-15 record in 2015 with a 4.28 ERA. Kennedy could be a late-round option in deeper mixed leagues and a solid option in AL-only leagues.

Astros | Ian Kennedy interests Houston

Wed, 13 Jan 2016 12:08:07 -0800

Free-agent SP Ian Kennedy (Padres) is of interest to the Houston Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Kennedy posted a career-high 9.30 strikeouts per nine innings with the San Diego Padres last year, and he also improved his command. The problem was he allowed the hardest contact for an eligible pitcher, which in turn led to a 17.2% HR/FB rate. As more of a fly-ball pitcher, a move to Houston wouldn't be ideal for Kennedy.

Royals | Ian Kennedy interests Royals

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 09:41:46 -0800

Free-agent SP Ian Kennedy (Padres) is of interest to the Kansas City Royals, who are expected to pursue him.

Fantasy Tip: Kennedy's peak value is in the National League. He took a step back last season, but he's still in the SP3 discussion.

Marlins | Miami pursuing Ian Kennedy?

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 18:39:42 -0800

The Miami Marlins could be interested in free-agent SP Ian Kennedy (Padres).

Fantasy Tip: Kennedy went 9-15 with a 4.28 ERA in 30 starts for San Diego in 2015, although he got better as the season went along and averaged more than a strikeout per inning. He's worth considering as a starter for the back end of fantasy rotations in mixed leagues, especially if he remains in the National League.

Royals | Ian Kennedy interests Royals

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 11:23:46 -0800

Free-agent SP Ian Kennedy (Padres) is of interest to the Kansas City Royals as they look for another starting pitcher.

Fantasy Tip: Kennedy didn't have his best season with the Friars in 2015, going 9-15 with a 4.28 ERA in 30 starts, but he still struck out 9.3 hitters per nine innings for the second straight year and can be a bargain in fantasy baseball drafts. A rebound could be on the horizon, although a move back to the American League could require a period of adjustment.

Giants | San Francisco seeking another starter

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 14:44:03 -0800

Free-agent SPs Mike Leake (Giants), Wei-Yin Chen (Orioles) and Ian Kennedy (Padres) are all of interest to the San Francisco Giants.

Fantasy Tip: San Francisco is looking for another hurler to fill out their starting rotation. Leake and Chen are low-end grabs in seasonal leagues because of their lack of strikeout upside, and should be reserved for deep mixed formats and usage as streamers in favorable matchups. Kennedy has upside as an end-of-the-rotation arm for your virtual rotation, especially if he sticks in the National League.

Padres | Ian Kennedy rejects qualifying offer

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 15:24:43 -0800

San Diego Padres SP Ian Kennedy rejected the San Diego Padres' one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer Friday, Nov. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Kennedy's landing spot will have a significant impact on his fantasy value leading into the 2016 season. He has shown well in stretches, but cannot be started with confidence in all matchups, so make sure to be selective with who you start him against. Leaving PETCO Park is a hit to his fantasy stock, too.

Tigers | Detroit eyeing Jeff Samardzija, Ian Kennedy

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 13:14:25 -0800

Free-agent SPs Jeff Samardzija (White Sox) and Ian Kennedy (Padres) are offseason targets of the Detroit Tigers, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Samardzija really struggled in 2015, but there is upside for a bounce-back showing next season, especially if he lands back in the National League. Kennedy leaving pitcher-friendly PETCO Park can't be spun as a positive, and while he has shown flashes throughout his career, he isn't a matchup-proof starter in the majority of seasonal leagues. Landing spots will significantly impact where Samardzija and Kennedy will rank for fantasy drafts this spring.
