Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith said the team is willing to sit down with WR Andre Johnson and attempt to rework his current contract, according to ESPN.com. However, Smith added that redoing a contract with five years remaining, as Johnson's does, will be difficult. "It's very difficult," Smith said. "It's something that's not customary, but we've got a relationship with him and he knows we are willing to sit down and talk with him."

The team has only five after trading away their second- and sixth-round picks. Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith feels that QB David Carr has all of the athletic ability and intangibles to be a solid NFL quarterback. Smith added that he thinks Carr will be able to see his potential under the tutelage of head coach Gary Kubiak. He also feels the sacks Carr has taken are a combination of issues, but thinks the team has made improvements on the offensive line and other areas to reduce the number of sacks.

Smith talked about what kind of players the Texans would look for, "I think that number one, scouts, we tend to value height, weight and speed. But then, the most important thing I think that you look for is what I call football character." Smith talked about head coach Gary Kubiak's ability to endear to his players while gaining their respect at the same time. He becomes the second general manager in team history as he takes over for Charley Casserly. "We looked long and hard, and we have found the right man for the job," said Texans owner Bob McNair. "Rick was a candidate that head coach (Gary) Kubiak was familiar with during his time in Denver. Rick has a wonderful knowledge of the NFL and he has a plan in place to make the Texans a winner."
