Buffalo Bills DE Mario Williams said his former team, the Houston Texans, forced his exit out of town. Williams maintains he wanted to remain with the team all along. "I didn't want to enter free agency in the first place, but it was a one-way door given to me by the GM to leave Houston," Williams said, referring to general manager Rick Smith. "I want the fans there to know entering free agency was not my decision."

The Houston Texans have agreed to contract extensions for both general manager Rick Smith and head coach Gary Kubiak, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. Terms of the deals were not disclosed. A formal announcement is expected Thursday, June 14.

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair said he is ready to begin contract extension talks with head coach Gary Kubiak and general manager Rick Smith. McNair said there is no timetable for agreements but did say Kubiak would be the first to receive an extension.

Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith said the team is willing to sit down with WR Andre Johnson and attempt to rework his current contract, according to ESPN.com. However, Smith added that redoing a contract with five years remaining, as Johnson's does, will be difficult. "It's very difficult," Smith said. "It's something that's not customary, but we've got a relationship with him and he knows we are willing to sit down and talk with him."

Megan Manfull, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Houston Texans would be interested in moving back in the 2008 NFL Draft and acquiring extra picks. The team has only five after trading away their second- and sixth-round picks. General manager Rick Smith said, "Certainly we're confident that we're going to get a good player at the 18th pick, but if there is an opportunity for us to move backwards and acquire additional picks I think you've got to entertain that."

Jerome Solomon, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans QB David Carr remains the team's starting quarterback for now, but the possibility remains Carr could be traded. "That's the truth," general manager Rick Smith said. "I'm saying that that is a possibility." "Stars have to line up correctly and the value has to be there, but we're going to improve our football team anyway that we can do so. If that includes some type of trade, then we'll entertain that. That does not mean that we're going to do that absolutely, but we'll entertain it. If I'm saying right now and you draw an inference (that Carr might be traded) from that, then you are correct."

Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith feels that QB David Carr has all of the athletic ability and intangibles to be a solid NFL quarterback. Smith added that he thinks Carr will be able to see his potential under the tutelage of head coach Gary Kubiak. He also feels the sacks Carr has taken are a combination of issues, but thinks the team has made improvements on the offensive line and other areas to reduce the number of sacks.

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports agent Bob LaMonte has had a big offseason. In the past week, LaMonte has finalized the contracts for Rick Smith to become the general manager of the Houston Texans and Rick Spielman to become the vice president of player personnel for the Minnesota Vikings. Among his other negotiations was the new contract for Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren. He also landed other clients deals with NFL teams.

HoustonTexans.com reports Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith addressed the media in his introduction as the new general manager for the Texans Monday, June 5. Smith talked about what kind of players the Texans would look for, "I think that number one, scouts, we tend to value height, weight and speed. But then, the most important thing I think that you look for is what I call football character." Smith talked about head coach Gary Kubiak's ability to endear to his players while gaining their respect at the same time. Smith said it was ironic that Kubiak was hired first, and now he is getting his opportunity with him, because he would have always hired Kubiak if he had ever gotten this opportunity, "This guy is going to be a tremendous, tremendous football coach."

HoustonTexans.com reports the Houston Texans have officially announced Rick Smith as the team's new general manger. He becomes the second general manager in team history as he takes over for Charley Casserly. "We looked long and hard, and we have found the right man for the job," said Texans owner Bob McNair. "Rick was a candidate that head coach (Gary) Kubiak was familiar with during his time in Denver. Rick has a wonderful knowledge of the NFL and he has a plan in place to make the Texans a winner."
