NFL | Officials Play Crucial Role Again

Steelers | News & Notes

Tue, 17 Apr 2001 00:40:24 -0700

The Post Gazette reports Steelers coach Bill Cowher said the team would like to add a fourth QB to its roster. He said it may not be a rookie as the team is open to signing a free agent. The team is expected to wait until Friday's deadline to formally announce their decision on RB Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala's offer sheet, although indications earlier were they would match it. Negotiations with free agent LB Mike Jones (Rams) continue. Team officials are talking to the agents of their starting CBs, Dewayne Washington and Chad Scott, about extending their contracts. Washington's agent Steve Zucker said they are "just talking." Both are eligible for free agency after the 2001 season. Cowher wants WR Plaxico Burress to stop catching and QB Kent Graham to stop throwing. Both are ahead on their rehab schedules so Cowher wants them to slow down some.

Steelers | CB Wanted?

Sat, 14 Apr 2001 00:29:01 -0700

The Tribune Review reports with four Pittsburgh Steelers cornerbacks, starters Chad Scott and Dewayne Washington and key backups Deshea Townsend and Jason Simmons, scheduled to become free agents at the end of the 2001 season the team will probably look to add a CB in the NFL Draft. The Steelers know salary cap reality has taught them it will be difficult to re-sign Scott and Washington. The Steelers can't afford to let their six picks in the draft pass without addressing the position at least once. The Steelers could pick a CB with their first round pick, No. 16 overall or roll the dice and hope a good corner is available in round two. They could trade down in round one to acquire other picks later in the draft.

Fri, 09 Mar 2001 00:15:04 -0800

The team has six starters that fit that criteria: WR Hines Ward, LBs Jason Gildon and Earl Holmes, P Josh Miller and CBs Chad Scott and Dewayne Washington. Ward is currently a restricted free agent, the other five can become free agents after this season.
