Giants | Flexor strain now behind Johnny Cueto

Thu, 17 Dec 2015 12:49:36 -0800

San Francisco Giants SP Johnny Cueto's (elbow) MRI exam Wednesday, Dec. 16, revealed his flexor strain has healed, according to general manager Bobby Evans.

Fantasy Tip: A return to the National League will help Cueto return to his dominant self, especially with his elbow injuries behind him. A rough adjustment to the American League plagued his otherwise solid six-year run, and it could lead to Cueto being a nice value pick in the early middle rounds this spring. View him as a mid- to low-end No. 1 arm for your virtual rotation.

Giants | Financial terms for Johnny Cueto deal

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 13:40:04 -0800

Updating an ongoing story, San Francisco Giants SP Johnny Cueto (Royals) signed a six-year, $130 million contract with an opt-out clause after the 2017 season Monday, Dec. 14, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto is entering his age-30 season, and his fantasy value could be a little low following his horrible conclusion to the 2015 campaign with the Kansas City Royals. Still, he has been much better in the National League and returned excellent numbers in each of the past five seasons in the NL. View him as a No. 1 starter option for your virtual rotation and second-tier arm overall.

Giants | Johnny Cueto reaches deal with the Giants

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 13:27:34 -0800

Updating an ongoing story, free-agent SP Johnny Cueto (Royals) reached a six-year contract agreement with the San Francisco Giants, pending a physical, according to sources. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Entering the 2015 season, Cueto owned a 2.73 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and a 7.4 K/9 over his previous five seasons, and before a mid-season deal to the Kansas City Royals, Cueto sported a 2.62 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP and a 8.3 K/9 last year. The American League was unkind to Cueto, though, and his fantasy stock could be a little undervalued this spring. View him as a second-tier arm worthy of targeting as a mid-range No. 1 starter for your fantasy rotation.

Giants | San Francisco set to sign Johnny Cueto?

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 13:26:06 -0800

Updating an ongoing story, free-agent SP Johnny Cueto (Royals) could reach a deal with the San Francisco Giants soon, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: A return to the National League would bode well for Cueto rebounding from his rough finish to the 2015 season. He should be viewed as a potential mid-range No. 1 starter for your fantasy rotation, especially if he lands with the Giants.

MLB | Two teams hesitant on Johnny Cueto

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 11:57:02 -0800

The Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals are hesitant to go near the Arizona Diamondbacks' six-year, $120-126 million offer for free-agent SP Johnny Cueto (Royals).

Fantasy Tip: Cueto has been around and has logged a heavy amount of innings on his right arm. He struggled with the transition to the American League last year in the second half of the season, so a return to the National League would probably be best for his fantasy value. Cueto remains a top-end arm, though, as more of a midrange No. 1 starting pitcher.

Giants | SF making push for Johnny Cueto

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 10:47:36 -0800

The San Francisco Giants are making a strong push to sign free-agent SP Johnny Cueto (Royals), according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto would benefit greatly with a return to the National League in a pitcher's park after struggling with his transition to the American League in the second half last year for the Kansas City Royals.

MLB | Johnny Cueto taking his time

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 11:07:14 -0800

Free-agent SP Johnny Cueto (Royals) is taking his time on the free-agent market and is in no hurry to sign a contract at the winter meetings this week, according to his agent, Bryce Dixon. "I don't expect anything," Dixon said. "I don't have a specific timetable. It may occur during or after the winter meetings. We are in no hurry." Cueto went 11-13 with a 3.44 ERA with the Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals last year.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto remains the most attractive free-agent pitcher left on the market. He struggled to adapt with his move to the American League, so returning to the National League would present the best value to his prospective fantasy owners. Stay tuned on where he lands.

Dodgers | Johnny Cueto to be pursued by Dodgers

Fri, 04 Dec 2015 17:32:21 -0800

The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to turn their attention to pursuing free-agent SP Johnny Cueto (Royals), as a result of free-agent SP Zack Greinke agreeing to terms with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto's numbers went downhill after he was traded from the Cincinnati Reds to the Kansas City Royals during the middle of last season, so a possible return to the National League would do wonders for his fantasy value. However, he is arguably the best remaining free-agent starter available, so many other clubs will also be vying for his services. He should be selected in the early rounds of next year's drafts regardless of where he lands due to his high strikeout totals, although an NL destination would be preferred from a fantasy standpoint.

MLB | Johnny Cueto receiving plenty of interest

Mon, 30 Nov 2015 13:56:26 -0800

Free-agent SP Johnny Cueto (Royals) has received interest from the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto ended his tenure with the Kansas City Royals in style, as he held the New York Mets to one run through nine innings in winning fashion during Game 2 of the World Series. However, he struggled during the regular season with a 4.76 ERA through 81.1 innings. Still, Cueto projects to return to being a fringe No. 1 starter for your fantasy rotation, especially if he returns to the National League. After all, dating back to 2011, he has a 2.71 ERA, a 3.41 FIP, a 1.08 WHIP and a 7.5 K/9 over 889 1/3 innings.

Diamondbacks | Arizona still interested in Cueto

Mon, 30 Nov 2015 10:07:30 -0800

The Arizona Diamondbacks remain interested in signing free-agent SP Johnny Cueto (Royals) after he turned down their six-year, $120 million offer. However, they now realize that Cueto's value is now higher after SP Jordan Zimmermann signed a five-year, $110 million deal with the Detroit Tigers.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto evened himself out in the playoffs with the Royals but was considerably struggling in the second half of last year after his move from the National League to the American League. His fantasy value will likely be higher if he returns to the NL, but it'll be hard to gauge his worth to fantasy owners until he finds a landing spot.
