Mitchell said, "I don't want to say I'm being blackballed, and I know it's not Andy Reid. But somebody is blackballing me. There has to be something going on we don't know about." Mitchell admits his health was a problem last year and said he is working out with Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens in Atlanta. Mitchell doesn't understand why he can't land a job with one of the 32 NFL teams and added, "I mean, you look at my numbers, and they weren't that great. But you need to look further. Check out the percentage of passes I caught compared to the number thrown to me. I guarantee you I rank with the best in the league."

Wed, 31 Aug 2005 06:51:55 -0700

Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs WR Freddie Mitchell (knee) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 30. He is fully confident that he can crack the 53-man roster despite missing a month because of a knee injury. He ran, cut, caught and was tired when the two-hour workout was over. He ran with the scout team, which was miles away from his status a year ago when he played in the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles. "I will be back to that Freddie," Mitchell said. "I know that (the coaches) feel it. The best is yet to come. I feel like once I get to 100 percent I can make the moves and do the things I did with the Eagles." Head coach Dick Vermeil said Mitchell looked OK Tuesday and didn't appear to favor his right knee.

Chiefs | Mitchell's Roster Spot in Jeopardy

Tue, 16 Aug 2005 15:47:32 -0700

David Aldridge, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil said Monday, Aug. 15, that the knee injury WR Freddie Mitchell (knee) suffered early in Kansas City's training camp may cost Mitchell an opportunity to play with the Chiefs this season. The team has not been happy with Mitchell since he declined to have arthroscopic surgery after tearing meniscus cartilage in his right knee July 30. "He was doing fine before he hurt the cartilage, and he elected on his own not to get it operated on," Vermeil said after Monday morning's practice, Aug. 15. "Our people thought he ought to get it done, and he'd be back practicing right now. But, you know, a player has his right to make a decision, and, hopefully, it was not the wrong one for him. But he would have been very, very competitive to make this football team. It's going to be tough now, if you're not in position to compete."

Chiefs | Mitchell doing the Right Things

Sat, 30 Jul 2005 20:22:50 -0700

Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs WR Freddie Mitchell has looked good at training camp so far and he's done it quietly. Through three days of training camp, Mitchell has caught passes, spent extra time with wide receivers coach Charlie Joiner, and kept his mouth zipped. Well, almost. There was the interview session Thursday, July 28, when Mitchell told the cameras he had nothing to prove, then headed off alone to the indoor practice facility and said that wasn't entirely true. "It actually will feel good to shut a lot of people up," Mitchell said. "Just let them know that hey, he's a good receiver who's just been in a bad situation. I felt like it was a bad situation in Philadelphia." Mitchell says he didn't receive a gag order from Vermeil. He just doesn't want to give the media any more fodder.

Eagles | Mitchell Talks McNabb

Mon, 20 Jun 2005 20:50:24 -0700

Updating previous reports, according to Dave Spadaro of PhiladelphiaEagles.com, Kansas City Chiefs WR Freddie Mitchell has expanded upon his offseason comments that Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb and himself did not get along too well towards the end of their time together. "Me and the quarterback really didn't get along like you all thought we did," Mitchell said. "A lot of stuff happened under the table, and unfortunately we couldn't make it into a better situation…You go ask any of my teammates on the Eagles if they have different thoughts about it. They know me as a team player who would make that long block to free up Brian Westbrook. It's just that I wanted to feel more a part of the win. I wanted more catches so I could say I helped to win."

Chiefs | More on Mitchell and the Chiefs

Sat, 18 Jun 2005 18:30:00 -0700

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports newly signed WR Freddie Mitchell, in a best case scenario, could wind up as the team's No. 2 wide receiver starting next to WR Eddie Kennison. Worst case he figures to be the fourth receiver behind Kennison, WR Samie Parker and WR Dante' Hall. Mitchell, known for his outlandish comments, was low-key his first day with the Chiefs. His loudmouth reputation is well-deserved, according to Chiefs OL John Welbourn, who played with Mitchell on the Eagles. Head coach Dick Vermeil, a believer in positive locker-room chemistry, doesn't appear concerned he's getting a player who might poison the Chiefs. "I think anytime you get a fresh start, it's good and he'll start fresh," Vermeil said. "I'm sure as a young receiver he made some mistakes in Philadelphia like they all do, like we all do. I think he's matured and will do a good job in competing."

Chiefs | Contract Update: F. Mitchell

Sat, 18 Jun 2005 18:03:02 -0700

ESPN.com reports the one-year contract signed with the Kansas City Chiefs by WR Freddie Mitchell has a base salary of $540,000, the NFL minimum for a four-year veteran. Because he failed to reach any of the performance or playing time incentives in his initial contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, which would have triggered "escalators" that raised the base salaries in later years, Mitchell was slated to earn the minimum with the Eagles as well. So, from a financial standpoint, changing teams did not cost him anything.

He will do some work at practice Sunday, June 19, but not a full practice. Vermeil plans to bring Mitchell along slowly. "He'll stay here next week with the rookies and go through things and learn how we do things and the system and nomenclature. We know that he's tough; we know that he can catch the ball in a crowd; we know that he's smart and we know he'll knock your helmet off blocking. He's got all those attributes that we like," said Vermeil.

He's an experienced receiver, a first round pick and one that we also rated a first round pick when he came out. He's a good friend of mine; his attitude's real good and Andy Reid gave him an outstanding recommendation. So we'll give him a shot. It'll be tough; it'll be very competitive."
