Atlanta Falcons QB Chris Redman (illness) was able to come on in relief of QB Matt Ryan in a lopsided Week 17 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Redman was added to the injury report Friday, Dec. 31, when he became ill. He was 7 of 12 for 71 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

Updating a previous item, D. Orlando Ledbetter, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Falcons P Michael Koenen (concussion) suffered a concussion Week 16. PK Matt Bryant (hamstring) filled in at punter while Koenen was injured, but Bryant pulled a hamstring and was forced to leave the game. QB Chris Redman would have been the punter after Bryant was hurt, but the team went for a couple of fourth-down calls in the second half so that Redman wouldn't have to punt.

"The thing that we have to do is come to an agreement about how we want to sequence this throughout the preseason,'' head coach Mike Smith said. "Each of our quarterbacks will have an opportunity to work with the first unit and to work against the starting defense. We're trying to be pretty open minded. We feel it will clarify itself in terms of who we feel is the best quarterback. We've said from day one that the best guy is going to play. But those dynamics are going to change throughout the entire season.'' The team has been spreading the work among QB Matt Ryan, QB Chris Redman, QB Joey Harrington and QB D.J. Shockley throughout camp. However, the decision is expected to come down to opening the season with Redman or Ryan.

The Associated Press reports Atlanta Falcons QB Chris Redman isn't ready to hand over the starting job to rookie QB Matt Ryan. Ryan is clearly the team's quarterback of the future after they drafted him in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft, but Redman wants to be the team's No. 1 quarterback when the season begins. Redman, the incumbent starter, said he feels he has earned respect around the team and he will be OK as long as he does his part. Redman completed 59.7 percent of his passes last year for 1,079 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. His 90.7 quarterback rating in 2007 was the best of any of the quarterbacks on the team.
