Eagles | Want RBs to improve in blitz pickup

Thu, 14 Feb 2013 10:02:43 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles running backs coach Duce Staley will ask his group to improve in pass protection, particularly blitz pickups. In order to be effective in such an area, Staley feels players must have the right attitude. "That's one thing I've learned since I played in this league ... You've got to have that want to. You've got to have the will to go up there and meet a guy face to face and punch him in the mouth. I told the running backs last year, 'When you come off that field, make sure you're the one that's doing the whipping and not (being) the (whipped one). You're not the guy that got dropped on your neck.'" Staley also plans to have his backs become better students of the game. He wants players to take what they detect on tape from film study sessions and parlay it onto the field.

Steelers | Cobbs addition may impact Staley and Humes

Fri, 01 Sep 2006 16:32:03 -0700

The Associated Press reports the acquisition of RB Patrick Cobbs by the Pittsburgh Steelers could mean that neither RB Duce Staley nor seventh-round draft choice RB Cedric Humes will make the Steelers' 53-man roster. Cobbs is a power runner much like Staley, and it seems unlikely that the Steelers would keep both backs, plus third-down RB Verron Haynes, as backups to starting RB Willie Parker.

I like the experience that he brings and what he's done. He's gotten better each week."

Steelers | Parker will get goal line carries to start the season

Wed, 23 Aug 2006 21:37:06 -0700

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Willie Parker will remain in the game when the team is near the goal line, at least at the start of the season. Until RB Verron Haynes or RB Duce Staley proves they can fill the role former Steelers RB Jerome Bettis filled in 2005, Parker will stay. Head coach Bill Cowher said, "If somebody starts to surface and becomes that guy, as the season goes on I wouldn't rule it out. But I can't say right now there's been one person like there was with Jerome. And I don't think that's a bad thing. That's the way it was last year. This year's a different year."

Eagles | Philadelphia a potential landing spot for Staley?

Tue, 22 Aug 2006 14:50:41 -0700

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports if the Pittsburgh Steelers trade or release RB Duce Staley, one possible landing spot would seem to be the Philadelphia Eagles who, to date, have not had any trade conversations with the Steelers. Should Staley be released, and it is within the realm of possibility, the Eagles could be on the list of teams interested in his services. In recent seasons, the Eagles have made a habit out of bringing back longtime contributors and fan favorites. The Eagles are in the market for a big back and, earlier this week, visited with free agent RB Stephen Davis (Panthers).

Steelers | Things starting to return for Staley

Mon, 21 Aug 2006 01:06:53 -0700

Gerry Dulac, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Duce Staley has carried 12 times this preseason, the most on the Steelers. Staley had zero carries throughout the entire 2005 preseason. "I think I'm getting there. The more reps you get, your timing is starting to come back and you're starting to get that feel. Things are starting to come back to me and that's what it's about." Staley returns as the backup to RB Willie Parker and is looking to recapture his timing after playing in just four games in 2005.

Steelers | Staley getting a shot at short-yardage job

Thu, 17 Aug 2006 21:51:57 -0700

Rick Starr, of the Tribune-Review, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers are giving RB Duce Staley a chance to win the job as the team's new short-yardage back, a role previously filled by retired RB Jerome Bettis. Staley will play behind the first offensive line during the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 19, Steelers head coach Bill Cowher said. "We've got to give him a chance to run behind the good offensive line, just to get a sense of where he's at," Cowher said Thursday, Aug. 17. Staley said after practice that he won't attach any sense of urgency to the game. The Steelers don't have a long list of options if Staley can't fill their needs.

Steelers | Respect for Bettis prevented Staley from complaining

Wed, 02 Aug 2006 23:57:52 -0700

Alan Robinson, of the Associated Press, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Duce Staley did not complain about being snubbed during the 2005 season out of respect for RB Jerome Bettis, who retired after the season. Staley said, "I wasn't going to be selfish, say I should be out there playing - that's just not me. I knew I had that respect from Jerome coming in, even when I wasn't hurt. I carried the same respect when I got hurt. I was the same person throughout the whole deal." Both RB Verron Haynes and RB Willie Parker admire how Staley did not speak out a year ago. Haynes added, "To sacrifice like that takes a tremendous guy. That he could give it up because of the situation with Jerome, that shows a lot and speaks volumes about his character."
