Les Bowen, of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports Philadelphia Eagles QB Jeff Garcia is worried about the backup quarterback job to QB Donovan McNabb. QB Koy Detmer has been the starting holder for PK David Akers since 2000. Garcia said being the No. 3 quarterback was not something he envisioned when he signed here. He added, "It does [matter], when it comes down to somebody who's needed to step in and essentially play... I'd like to think that I can be that guy. Hopefully, we won't have to deal with that [Donovan getting hurt]. I'm not just here to just stand around - and that's not saying that that's the job of the third-string quarterback, because there are responsibilities that are required of everybody. But I'm a competitive person. If, God forbid, anything were to happen to Donovan, I want to be that guy who steps in and helps this team win games."
Wed, 23 Aug 2006 18:43:34 -0700
During his press conference, Philadelphia Eagles special teams coordinator John Harbaugh discussed the situation of whether QB Koy Detmer or P Dirk Johnson will be the holder for PK David Akers. "[QB] Koy [Detmer] is the better holder by the virtue of the experience. [P] Dirk [Johnson] is doing real well. Dirk took the majority of the reps this week. Dirk's going to get the majority of the reps during this game. We're trying to get them both ready. We're trying to make sure we have two guys that are ready to go and I think coach Reid will make that decision based on the holding part of it but also based on the offensive part as well," said Harbaugh. He added that Johnson has done just as well as Detmer in training camp.

Chang didn't do much his first two preseason appearances, but Thursday night, Aug. 17, in Baltimore he showed some flashes. Although the final numbers weren't impressive, Chang was victimized by two drops, one of them negating a potential 25-yard gain. As bad as Detmer has been, his passer rating for the preseason is 25.0, Chang has a chance.

Against the Baltimore Ravens, he completed 5 of 10 passes for 21 yards and one interception, and had a 16.7 passer rating. "He got some pressure (Thursday, Aug. 17, against Baltimore), and he didn't get to do as much as we wanted him to do," head coach Andy Reid said about Detmer. "We have to do a better job up front with protecting him."

Don Benevento, of the Courier-Post, reports Philadelphia Eagles QB Jeff Garcia is taking almost all the snaps with the second team as the Eagles continued their training camp at Lehigh University. That could indicate that QB Koy Detmer's time with the team is over, or it could indicate Detmer is being demoted to No. 3 quarterback. There is one thing that Detmer does better than any of the other Eagles, however, and that is hold for field goals and extra points for kicker PK David Akers. Special teams coach John Harbaugh said Thursday, July 27, that claim to fame likely would not be enough to assure that Detmer has a roster spot on the team this season. If Detmer were not to make the team, Harbaugh said the job would probably go to P Dirk Johnson.
Thu, 27 Jul 2006 17:06:43 -0700
Philadelphia Eagles special teams coordinator John Harbaugh believes P Dirk Johnson has done a great job as a holder for PK David Akers. Johnson could be in the mix as the starting holder along with QB Koy Detmer. Harbaugh said, "We feel like we have two holders that are starting holders. Dirk has done great and [P] Reggie Hodges has done a nice job as well. But, Dirk would be the starting holder, if not [QB] Koy [Detmer]. But, Koy is the best holder. Koy might be the best holder in the NFL. He does all of the little subtle things that you never see that make a big difference. But, by the same token Dirk is a heck of a holder too, so we've got confidence in both guys and whatever way it goes, it goes."
Thu, 27 Jul 2006 05:40:21 -0700
Nick Fierro, of the Express-Times, reports the more Philadelphia Eagles P Dirk Johnson works as the holder with the first-team field goal unit, the more QB Timmy Chang has a chance of beating out veteran QB Koy Detmer for the No. 3 QB job. Detmer is an expert holder, often called the best in the game by PK David Akers and LS Mike Bartrum, but the Eagles obviously are preparing as if he might not be around.

Zach Berman, of PhiladelphiaEagles.com, reports while the Philadelphia Eagles are set at No. 1 and No. 2 on their quarterback depth chart, slots held by QBs Donovan McNabb and Jeff Garcia, respectively, there will be a battle for the No. 3 spot between QBs Koy Detmer and Timmy Chang. Detmer has the upper hand from the start since he is a 10-year veteran with knowledge of the system, but the team has made it clear that Chang will have the chance to unseat him.

"Now that the NFL has let receivers go back to wearing numbers 10 through 19, I would like to get out of the 80s and get back to No. 10," Gaffney, who wears WR Freddie Mitchell's old No. 84, said Monday, May 15. "It worked pretty well for me in college." Detmer is open to a negotiation although he politely indicated he wouldn't be divulging the contents of that business. McNabb said he didn't think about the injury much until after the game. "When you're in a game situation, you're just battling past the injuries and trying to make things happen," he said. "You don't feel the pain until after the game. Right now, I'm a little sore." McNabb, who is probably the second most dangerous running quarterback in the league behind Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick, did not run once last night, although he was credited with one run on what was essentially a sack.
