Detroit Lions P Sam Martin (groin) normally handles kickoff duties, but he said Wednesday, Dec. 18, he felt a pull on the inside of his right groin during warmups before the Week 15 game against the Baltimore Ravens Monday, Dec. 16. While Martin punted during the game, PK David Akers handled kickoffs as well as his placekicking chores. The team might employ the same split in the Week 16 game against the New York Giants.

Green Bay Packers PK Mason Crosby has made 5-of-7 attempts from 50 yards and beyond, including two 57-yard field goals this season. Overall, he's converted a career-best 88.2 percent (30-of-34) of his attempts. Earlier this month, Crosby set the NFL record for most points by a player in his first seven seasons, breaking former Indianapolis Colts PK Mike Vanderjagt's mark of 874 points. Crosby now has 887 points. With two games remaining, he is on pace for the third 140-point season of his career. He would join David Akers (2008, 2010-11) and Stephen Gostkowski (2008, 2011-12) as the only players in league history to do so.

Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz gave PK David Akers a public vote of confidence after he missed his fifth kick of the season in Thursday's 40-10 win over the Green Bay Packers, but the Lions are planning to work out kickers next week as they weigh their options at the position. Akers, who signed a one-year deal to replace long-time kicker Jason Hanson in April, has made just 15 of 20 field-goal attempts this year and the Lions rank 29th in the league in field-goal percentage.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the team is still confident in PK David Akers even though he missed two field goals during the team's Week 2 game.
Tue, 20 Aug 2013 09:29:49 -0700
Detroit Lions PK David Akers had a successful 63-yard field goal off the right goalpost in practice Monday, Aug. 19, and any doubts about his leg strength after an injury-plagued 2012 should be put to rest.
Fantasy Tip: Technically, Akers is still involved in a position battle with Havard Rugland, but the starter is believed to be Akers. With Detroit's high-octane offense, a healthy Akers should re-emerge as a fantasy must-start option.

Detroit Lions PK David Akers (hernia) is still working his way back to full strength, and he did not work with the kickoff units in practice Friday, Aug. 2. PKs Sam Martin and Havard Rugland worked with the kickoff units, with Martin only simulating kicks and Rugland blasting three through the back of the end zone.
Fantasy Tip: Akers might require a kickoff specialist to be retained as the season opens, lessening wear and tear as he makes his way back from injury. However, he will still be kicking for a team which should score plenty of points, and therefore he will be a valuable fantasy asset.
Thu, 30 May 2013 15:46:53 -0700
Detroit Lions PK David Akers admitted that he's still not 100 percent following the aggravation that brought on lingering effects of his double hernia surgery last offseason. He hasn't been doing much kicking in organized team activities so far. He's taking it slow so he can be ready to go by training camp.
Fantasy Tip: Akers isn't even a sure bet to win the job over Havard Rugland. Whoever comes away with the gig, however, should serve as a frequent rental, if not a starting fantasy PK, thanks to this offense's potency.
