Mon, 15 May 2006 18:27:59 -0700 ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the St. Louis Rams released rookie free agent TE Ed Nelson because he struggled at times to assimilate football terminology. A few other teams inquired about Nelson after the draft, so there is a chance that one will offer him at least a tryout. Nelson will take some time to see if other teams indicate an interest in him before determining the direction of his future. Nelson was regarded as a longshot to make the roster.

Sun, 14 May 2006 21:47:30 -0700 Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams TE Ed Nelson strapped on a helmet Saturday, May 13, for the first time in eight years. He hasn't played football since his freshman year of high school. He said, "Everything's such a rush right now. I'm learning new things and working on blocking, receiving and trying to understand the plays. Everything's coming at me at once. Sometimes I try to just step back and just take a look at what's going on." He relaxed a little Saturday after catching a couple of passes and added, "The plays will come. I'm just trying to show them that I'm strong and athletic and that I have good hands."
Sun, 30 Apr 2006 17:54:54 -0700 The Associated Press reports the St. Louis Rams have signed undrafted rookie free agent TE Ed Nelson (Connecticut) to a two-year contract. No financial terms were disclosed. Nelson played basketball for Connecticut. "I didn't think I'd get drafted," said Nelson, expected to play tight end. "It's risky for a team to draft me, but a lot of teams know my potential."

Fri, 21 Apr 2006 21:43:04 -0700 Jeff Jacobs, of the Hartford Courant, reports Connecticut basketball player Ed Nelson, attempting to be an NFL tight end, worked out in front of 15 NFL scouts Friday, April 21. "I popped off a 34-inch vertical," Nelson said. For his part, Nelson said he's not worried if he doesn't get drafted next weekend. "I've only been practicing two weeks," he said. "I can't fool myself." "Whether he goes in the sixth round or the seventh round or free agent, it doesn't matter," agent Joe Linta said. Nelson's agility times in the shuttle runs were good. The three-cone drill, 7.22 seconds according to Linta, was very good. He had to do his first shuttle drill four times, failing to touch the line twice and stumbling once. His 40 time of 4.9 to 5.08, depending on the stopwatch, was mediocre. Nelson was measured at 6-6, 264. San Diego Chargers tight ends coach Rob Chudzinski led Nelson's blocking instruction.
Fri, 21 Apr 2006 18:49:35 -0700 WTNH reports Connecticut basketball player Ed Nelson has his day in front of NFL scouts Friday, April 21. He worked out in front of more than a dozen NFL scouts. Nelson was put through several agility drills. The scouts made him run the 40-yard dash; checked his vertical leap and got a good look at his pass catching and blocking skills. One scout told the station Nelson has a lot to learn, but at 6-6 and 260 pounds he said there was plenty to work with. Teams are looking at Nelson as a NFL tight end.

Nelson has not played football since high school, but is attempting to be drafted as a tight end.
Thu, 13 Apr 2006 14:54:55 -0700 The Associated Press reports NCAA basketball player Ed Nelson (Connecticut) has decided to pursue a career in the National Football League. The 6-foot-8, 265-pound senior power forward, who did not play college football, plans to work out for NFL teams April 21 at Connecticut's campus. "I came up to work out Ed with little expectations and came away convinced that he is an NFL prospect at the tight end position," Linta said. "He is very quick, has outstanding hands and great lower body strength."
