ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the St. Louis Rams released rookie free agent TE Ed Nelson because he struggled at times to assimilate football terminology. A few other teams inquired about Nelson after the draft, so there is a chance that one will offer him at least a tryout. Nelson will take some time to see if other teams indicate an interest in him before determining the direction of his future. Nelson was regarded as a longshot to make the roster.

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams TE Ed Nelson strapped on a helmet Saturday, May 13, for the first time in eight years. He hasn't played football since his freshman year of high school. He said, "Everything's such a rush right now. I'm learning new things and working on blocking, receiving and trying to understand the plays. Everything's coming at me at once. Sometimes I try to just step back and just take a look at what's going on." He relaxed a little Saturday after catching a couple of passes and added, "The plays will come. I'm just trying to show them that I'm strong and athletic and that I have good hands."

The Associated Press reports the St. Louis Rams have signed undrafted rookie free agent TE Ed Nelson (Connecticut) to a two-year contract. No financial terms were disclosed. Nelson played basketball for Connecticut. "I didn't think I'd get drafted," said Nelson, expected to play tight end. "It's risky for a team to draft me, but a lot of teams know my potential."
