Simon has not practiced since injuring his left knee during the first full week of training camp. The team placed him on the non-football injury list after being diagnosed as likely having polyarthritis. The condition will sideline Simon for the 2006 season and the team will not have to pay his $2.5 million base salary, according to sources who told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Simon and the team learned of the diagnosis after tests by specialists from the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minn., determined that the condition was not football-related. The diagnosis would allow the team to not pay his 2005 base salary of $2.5 million. An NFL Players Association official told Mortensen that the union assumes the Colts won't pay him because they placed him on the Non-Football Illness/Injury list. The union plans to appeal.
