Minnesota Vikings FS Harrison Smith and S Robert Blanton could be the starting safeties once the regular season begins. Smith is considered a favorite for a starting job while Blanton likely will have to beat out SS Jamarca Sanford and FS Mistral Raymond for the job.

Vikings | Had eye on Harrison Smith since the Senior Bowl

The Minnesota Vikings' decision to trade up in the NFL Draft to select FS Harrison Smith resulted in large part from the access the team's coaching staff had to Smith at the Senior Bowl. "When our coaches coached the Senior Bowl, they fell in love with Harrison Smith," general manager Rick Spielman said. "At safety, the depth after him got really thin. So we felt that was a guy we really wanted to get where we got him. That's the point with what we did."

Notre Dame had two players selected in the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday, April 26, for the first time since 1994 when the Arizona Cardinals tabbed WR Michael Floyd at No. 13, and DB Harrison Smith picked by the Minnesota Vikings at No. 29.

Notre Dame CB Robert Blanton, OT Taylor Dever, LB Darius Fleming, RB Jonas Gray and S Harrison Smith all took part in Notre Dame's Pro Day workout Tuesday, April 3. Blanton measured 6-foot 1/2, 201 pounds and ran a 4.95- and 4.62-second 40-yard dash. Dever measured 6-foot-5 1/4, 304 pounds and recorded a 5.36- and 5.38-second 40-yard dash, had a 27 1/2-inch vertical, an 8-foot-9 broad jump, a 4.78-second short shuttle and put up 15 strength lifts. Fleming measured 6-foot-1 1/2, 247 pounds and ran a 4.58- and 4.57-second 40-yard dash. Gray measured 5-foot-9 1/2, 225 pounds. Smith measured 6-foot-1 7/8, 214 pounds.
