Roy Cummings, of the Tampa Tribune, reports for The Sporting News that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are interested in free-agent James Jett to fill the team’s need for a speedy receiver who can stretch defenses. If Jett joins the team, it might make it harder for 2002 third-round pick Marquise Walker to get on the field, as he’s currently fourth on the depth chart.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports there was a rare sighting over the weekend for the Oakland Raiders, as WR James Jett caught two passes during the game against the Jets. Jett only caught two passes all season long and was inactive for many of the team's games. He said it felt good to get back on the field. He was used in four receiver sets as the team's fourth wide out.

He is currently in Mississippi with his ailing father. If Rice does not make it back in time for the Jets game, Gruden said Jerry Porter would start at split end, with WRs James Jett and Marcus Knight seeing additional action. "If Jerry's here by kickoff, he'll start," Gruden said.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Oakland Raiders WR James Jett could be inactive again this week although coach Jon Gruden wouldn't commit to anything yesterday. Gruden said that he would likely have three receivers active behind starters Tim Brown and Jerry Rice, and that special teams would weigh heavily in the decision. David Dunn is apparently one of the three, and Jerry Porter and Marcus Knight bot play on special teams.

The candidates are Jerry Rice, James Jett and Jerry Porter. OL Barry Sims said Monday coach Jon Gruden told him he had beat out Matt Stinchcomb for the starting spot at offensive left tackle. Also, LB Eric Barton said he was told LB William Thomas will retain his starting spot on the weak-side for the second straight season. Gruden was unavailable for comment Monday. Gruden said he will announce Wednesday who will start opposite Brown.

According to Gruden, he’s going to be a big part of the offense during the regular season. With the loss of Jerry Porter, Jett’s repetitions will increase starting this weekend.

The San Jose Mercury News reports Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said WR Jerry Porter (separated shoulder) has a chance to be ready for the final pre-season game against Green Bay. The team is optimistic about Porter starting in the season opener against Kansas City. Gruden said WR James Jett, WR Andy McCullough and running back/receiver Eric Metcalf would likely see more playing time against the Cowboys with Porter out. Porter left the team to attend the funeral of his brother, but he is scheduled to return Thursday night.

They currently have twelve receivers on roster; plus Eric Metcalf, who is playing both RB and WR. The team is likely to keep no more than seven receivers, but could keep as little as five. WRs Tim Brown and Jerry Rice are locks, and James Jett appears to be safe on the roster, too. WR Jerry Porter has impressed the team this summer but will need to continue to do so.

The Associated Press reports the Oakland Raiders defeated the Dallas Cowboys 21-14 tonight. RB Chris Howard's 8-yard touchdown run with 2:52 left broke a 14-all tie. On their first possession, the Raiders opened with a four-receiver set featuring Jerry Rice, Tim Brown, James Jett and Jerry Porter. QB Rich Gannon played for just the first series, completing 2-of-4 passes for 15 yards. For the Raiders other TDs, backup QB Bobby Hoying threw a 3-yard TD pass to TE Mondriel Fulcher and second-round pick QB Marques Tuiasosopo found fellow rookie WR Ken-Yon Rambo in the end zone with a 40-yard pass. Dallas rookie QB Quincy Carter had two TD passes, a 56-yard pass to WR Chris Brazzell and n 18-yard scoring pass to WR Bashir Yamini.
