Raiders | T. Brown adds criticism to Walsh's offense
Thu, 28 Sep 2006 20:30:20 -0700

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports former Oakland Raiders WR Tim Brown commented on the offense being run by Raiders offensive coordinator Tom Walsh. Brown said, "You just can't run that offense in the NFL anymore. They're calling timeouts, spending most of their timeouts before 10 minutes is up in the second quarter. They're getting delay penalties, getting to the line of scrimmage late, because those plays are 20 words long. I know that it was a horrible offense way back when. We just had to make plays and make things happen way back when. Being that the 40-second clock has come into play, and a lot of other rules have come into play since he was (last) in the league, I knew that would be a tough adjustment for him. Even zone blitzes and things of that nature. That makes that offense very tough. It was very one-dimensional, trying to audible was very difficult." WR Jerry Porter was critical of the team's offense during the offseason. Porter was quoted as saying, "I wanted [Detroit Lions offensive coordinator] Mike Martz as my coach and a real offense that's proven in today's NFL. Not something dusted off from a bed and breakfast in God knows where."

Raiders | T. Brown says team lacks a leader
Mon, 25 Sep 2006 20:57:14 -0700

Steve Corkran, of the Contra Costa Times, reports former Oakland Raiders WR Tim Brown said during an interview with the Los Angeles Times the team is lacking a leader in the locker room. Brown added, "I was on some bad teams there, but we were never devoid of leadership. Be it me, be it [RB] Marcus Allen back in the day, be it [DL] Howie Long, be it whomever. We were never devoid of leadership. And, right now the locker room is barren. I never played with [DL] Warren Sapp, and I'm not necessarily hearing bad things about Warren Sapp, but I'm not hearing `He's our guy' or `He's our leader.' I'm not hearing that about anybody on the offensive line, I'm not hearing that about anyone whatsoever." Sapp said during training camp he assumed a leadership role with the team and his teammates feel comfortable seeking his guidance.

Mon, 10 Apr 2006 17:58:04 -0700

Vic Ketchman, of Jaguars.com, reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jimmy Smith considered retirement after the team's postseason loss to the New England Patriots. Smith said, "Right after the loss to New England, I was, like, I'm done. I don't want to do this any more. I had to really talk to people to see if I want to do that." Smith talked to former NFL WR Tim Brown early in the offseason and asked him how he kept his enthusiasm over 17 seasons. Brown told him to get away from football completely throughout the offseason. Smith added, "I did that and now I'm excited. The schedule is out. It doesn't look like we'll have any blackouts. I hope this will be the year for my young receivers to step up."

NFL | Madden not guaranteed Hall of Fame bust
Fri, 3 Feb 2006 19:07:23 -0800

Mark Purdy, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports former Oakland Raiders head coach and current broadcaster John Madden is not a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame for several reasons. Some voters feel his ten seasons as head coach aren't long enough or feel he should have won more than one Super Bowl during that time-span. Former Raiders WR Tim Brown didn't help Madden's chances when he said, "I spent a long time in Raiderland and when you talk to the old guys who played under Madden, they say, `Look, if not for this guy, maybe we win three or four Super Bowls.' They actually think he may have hindered them."

Raiders | T. Brown to Retire Today, Hall of Fame Next?
Mon, 18 Jul 2005 05:15:27 -0700

Bill Soliday, of insidebayarea.com, reports Monday, July 18, is the day WR Tim Brown will sign a one-day contract with the Oakland Raiders so he can retire as a member of the team. Up next for Brown is a day in late January of 2010 when the 39-man Hall of Fame selection committee sits down to vote on what many have assumed to be a slam dunk, his induction in Canton. Associated Press pro football editor Dave Goldberg said, "Nobody is a slam dunk." "I don't think there is any question he is going to make it, it's just whether it is going to be on the first ballot," ESPN's John Clayton said. "It should happen, but I wouldn't guarantee anything for a wide receiver on the first ballot."
