Thu, 03 Nov 2005 13:16:47 -0800
Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Jets TE Doug Jolley is unhappy with the amount of playing time he has received thus far this season. "It's frustrating. I was expecting to play more," said Jolley, who was acquired via trade with the Oakland Raiders during the offseason. So far this year, Jolley has seven receptions for 79 yards and has averaged less than 12 plays per game. "Doug can make some plays in the passing game, but we've suffered there a lot," head coach Herman Edwards said. "We're trying to get him involved. Probably the most important thing is we've got to protect the quarterback when he drops back."
Thu, 08 Sep 2005 06:49:05 -0700
The Star-Ledger reports Offensive New York Jets offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger reacted coolly when told TE Doug Jolley expressed frustration about his role and revealed he had a meeting with Heimerdinger. Jolley was beaten out by TE Chris Baker for the starting job. "If we catch the right coverages, Doug will be in the mix," Heimerdinger said. "I never go into a game saying, 'Don't throw to this guy.'" Asked why the response was a bit terse, Heimerdinger said, "I thought that conversation was between me and Doug."
Sun, 04 Sep 2005 09:48:33 -0700
The New York Daily News reports New York Jets TE Doug Jolley is confused about his role with the team. Jolley already has approached offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger to discuss his role. They've had "a few talks," according to Jolley, who declined to divulge the offensive coordinator's response. Evidently, it didn't clarify the matter for the fourth-year tight end. "It's confusing," he added. "I'm just trying not to get frustrated." As noted earlier, Jolley remains behind TE Chris Baker on the depth chart. Jolley is the better receiver of the two, but he didn't get many prime opportunities in the preseason. He finished with only four receptions for 24 yards, with one drop. Head coach Herman Edwards cautioned not to read too much into the modest numbers, saying the Jets kept Jolley under wraps because they didn't want to reveal too much of their playbook.

I think we've got the talent to do real well with it. If you look at Heimerdinger's record, he's had a lot of tight ends catch balls everywhere he's gone. I'm looking to have the same relationship with (Chad Pennington) as I had with Rich Gannon in Oakland."

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports the New York Jets, who shipped their first-round draft choice (No. 26 overall) to the Oakland Raiders in a packaged deal for TE Doug Jolley, could decide to jump back into the first round by packaging some draft picks this year or next to move up far enough to land Auburn CB Carlos Rogers. While Rogers is one prospect the Jets are believed to covet, they could just as easily move into the latter part of the opening round if a player they've targeted is slipping.

This is a guy we have liked for a long time and we feel like he can add something to the tight end position, especially from a receiving standpoint."

Updating a previous report, Steve Corkran, of the Contra Costa Times, reports Oakland Raiders TE Teyo Johnson was the fourth tight end inserted in the Saturday, Aug. 14, preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers. However, Raiders head coach Norv Turner said Johnson shouldn't read much into that. "We've got four tight ends that can play, and we're going to play four tight ends through this preseason," Turner said. "Teyo does a number of things better than all three of the other guys, and I would say that about each guy." Turner also said it's "impossible" to say where Johnson is on the depth chart at this point because of the competition – TEs Roland Williams, Doug Jolley and rookie Courtney Anderson – at the tight end position.

Oakland Raiders TE O.J. Santiago received his most substantial playing time of the season Sunday, Nov. 16, against the Minnesota Vikings and caught two passes for a team-high 53 yards. Santiago is the best blocker of Oakland's three tight ends (TEs Teyo Johnson and Doug Jolley are the others) and the Raiders have newfound emphasis on the running game, which should mean more playing time. Raiders head coach Bill Callahan said the team would continue to use all three, based on the opposition and Oakland's game plan.
