The Associated Press reports Oakland Raiders rookie S Michael Huff (ankle) will be doubtful for the Oakland Raiders' preseason game Friday night, Aug. 25, because of a sprained left ankle. "Huff is a little sore," head coach Art Shell said Monday. "He's doubtful for the game. Hopefully he'll be ready by next week, if not, then by the opener. You want to be careful with that." Huff has already moved past S Derrick Gibson as Oakland's starting safety. Gibson is expected to start in Huff's place Friday against the Detroit Lions.

Steve Corkran, of the Contra Costa Times, reports the Oakland Raiders exercised a clause in SS Derrick Gibson's contract that voids the remainder of Gibson's contract and makes him an unrestricted free agent. Gibson was scheduled to make $10 million this season; a figure the Raiders had no intention of honoring. Therefore, Gibson's only realistic shot of sticking with the Raiders for a sixth season was if he agreed to a restructured contract.

The Oakland Raiders will probably play a lot of their "big nickel" alignment for the third straight game during their Week 3 contest because the Philadelphia Eagles like to spread out the field and do a lot with RB Brian Westbrook. In that alignment, the safeties are Derrick Gibson and Renaldo Hill and the cornerbacks are Nnamdi Asomugha, Charles Woodson and Stanford Routt. Gibson often plays in the box like a linebacker in that alignment.

As reported, he has also been running with the first-string defense at safety. Head coach Norv Turner and Gibson downplayed any talks of him being promoted to the starting lineup.

David Bush, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports Oakland Raiders S Derrick Gibson was the strong safety with the first unit at practice Tuesday, August 9. He had been second string behind S Marques Anderson, who was added last year when Gibson went down. "It has kind of worked into that and we worked Derrick a lot there today," head coach Norv Turner said. Gibson believes he is ready to take the job. "I thought I was ready last year when I got hurt," he said. "I feel real comfortable out there."

Steve Corkran, writing for the Sporting News, reports Oakland Raiders S Derrick Gibson is healthy again, fully recovered from a shoulder injury, and ready to reclaim the starting job at strong safety. He'll compete with S Marques Anderson, but it appears the Raiders feel Gibson will win the job and then they will move Anderson to another position.

Steve Corkran, reports for the Sporting News, the Oakland Raiders are expecting a two man race between safeties Derrick Gibson and Marques Anderson to see who becomes the team's starting strong safety. Gibson is returning from a shoulder injury that cost him the entire 2004 season. Anderson played under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's scheme last season. Both are talented players who still haven't reached their potential. Gibson is a big hitter and fast. Anderson is also a big hitter. Both players struggle with pass coverage. It looks like this battle will go neck and neck until the end of training camp when one of them will emerge as the starter.

Updating previous reports, Oakland Raiders SS Derrick Gibson (neck) underwent a CAT scan and x-rays Monday, Nov. 24, on his injured neck and both were negative. The injury was determined to be a bruise and Gibson was up and walking by Monday afternoon. If Gibson is unable to play in Week 13, SS Anthony Dorsett will replace him.
