Eric Gilmore, of the Contra-Costa Times, reports if Oakland Raiders RB Charlie Garner can't play in the Thursday, August 14 pre-season game against the San Francisco 49ers, Raiders RB Tyrone Wheatley will start. Raiders RB Madre Hill will follow Wheatley in the running back rotation, followed by rookie RB Justin Fargas.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Oakland Raiders head coach Bill Callahan had to tell LB Bill Romanowski he needs to temper his enthusiasm a bit during practice. Romanowski ran right through RB Madre Hill during practice and Callahan doesnít want to see his players beat up during practice. Callahan said itís common when a veteran player joins a new team, as Romanowski has this off-season, and that he has some old habits to break.

The team's official site reports San Diego Chargers coach Mike Riley said QB Dave Dickenson will see most of the action in this weekend's pre-season game. Rookie QB Drew Brees probably won't play. "Iím leaning towards not playing Drew," said Riley. "Iím not totally committed to that yet, but I just donít feel comfortable." At RB Ronney Jenkins, Mukala Sikyala and Madre Hill will see action during the game.

The Associated Press reports the San Diego Chargers had to cancel a scrimmage today because they have so many injuries. Among the injured players are LB Junior Seau (Achilles' tendon), WR Curtis Conway (groin), DE Marcellus Wiley (hamstring) and QB Dave Dickenson, the former CFL star who has a tired arm from throwing so many passes. The team is down to one fully healthy RB, recently signed Madre Hill. Coach Mike Riley thinks most of the injured players will be OK to practice Monday morning.

The Washington Post reports the Washington Redskins completed their reported trade with the New Orleans Saints on Friday. They acquired RB Robert Arnaud, not Chad Morton as expected. Arnaud will compete for a reserve RB job and will cost the Redskins a low-round draft choice, probably a seventh-round selection, if he makes the team. The Redskins also are in discussions with free agent RB Madre Hill, an NFL Europe standout. Trading for Arnaud does not necessarily eliminate the possibility of the Redskins signing Hill.

The Times-Union reports Jacksonville Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin, said to be visibly angry, met with RB Stacey Mack on Thursday two days after Mack was forced to post $1,500 bond for offering an undercover police officer $15 for oral sex. "I'm very disappointed in him," Coughlin said. "I'm obviously going to spend a lot of time with him to find out what provoked the incident." As previously reported, the team may sign free agent RB Madre Hill as a new running back.

The Times Union reports the Jacksonville Jaguars contacted free agent RB Madre Hill last week. The Jaguars could sign Hill, this week, agent Steve Weinberg said. The team has not been happy with backup RB Stacey Mack and his arrest on Tuesday will not help his situation. The Jaguars declined comment on Mack's arrest. Mack's future with the Jaguars was cloudy even before his arrest and the team could use any savings from his release to help sign their No. 1 draft pick, DL Marcus Stroud.

The Washington Post reports the Washington Redskins plan to add at least one veteran backup RB before training camp Coach Marty Schottenheimer said Monday. The team has worked out free agents Greg Hill, Byron Hanspard and Robert Chancey as prospective backups to Stephen Davis. They also have considered signing NFL Europe standout Madre Hill. Schottenheimer added recently signed kickoff returner Michael Bates could be used as a third-down receiver out of the backfield.

Terry Pluto writes in the Akron Beacon Journal that everyt ime Browns rookie RB Madre Hill walks into the team's locker room he considers his presence there a miracle. Hill has been one of the early surprises of the Browns off-season minicamps. "You want kids like Madre Hill to make it," said Browns coach Chris Palmer. "He can't watch enough film. He has a real thirst for knowledge. He has the speed of an NFL back." After blowing out each of his knees in college, Hill is hoping to make it in the NFL. In the minicamps, Hill has run hard, run well and best of all, run quickly. He continually asks the coaches to stay after practice to work with him. Palmer says RB Terry Kirby is the starting tailback, but Hill and Sedrick Shaw are in the picture for playing time.

According to a report by Tony Grossi in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, despite a perceived weakness at the RB position, Browns coach Chris Palmer says that he is not interested in RB Lawrence Phillips who is tearing up the NFL Europe league. Recent speculation had the Browns mentioned as one of the teams pondering Phillips. Palmer also said he had no interest in RB Rashaan Salaam who just signed with the Raiders nor does he have any interest in Tyrone Wheatley who may or may not wind up in Miami. Palmer has been impressed with rookie RB Madre Hill in minicamp and he also wants to see what former Patriots RB Sedrick Shaw can do.
