Cardinals | Jason Motte to 60-day DL

Mon, 13 May 2013 00:39:06 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals transferred CL Jason Motte (elbow) to the 60-day disabled list, which removed him from the 40-man roster. The move was strictly procedural, as Motte will miss the 2013 season due to Tommy John surgery.

Cardinals | Jason Motte out for the year

Fri, 03 May 2013 14:36:51 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow) didn't feel comfortable throwing Friday, May 3, so he will undergo Tommy John surgery Monday, May 6. Motte will miss the rest of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Signs had been pointing this way for some time now. Edward Mujica has taken the closer's job and run with it since Mitchell Boggs struggled in the role to start the season. Boggs was sent to the minors today.

In the long term, Trevor Rosenthal may be the best bet, but as long as Mujica is getting the job done, Rosenthal will be resigned to the setup role, for now. Mujica and Rosenthal should both be owned in all formats. Carlos Martinez was brought up to take Boggs' spot in the bullpen, but he isn't expected to enter the saves picture anytime soon.

Cardinals | Jason Motte feeling good

Mon, 29 Apr 2013 13:50:36 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow) said he felt fine after throwing for the second straight day Sunday, April 28. "I woke up this morning and didn't take a step back," Motte said Sunday. "It felt good. If it didn't feel good I don't think we'd have moved forward." The Cardinals said earlier this month that if Motte hadn't improved by the beginning of May he would likely have season-ending reconstructive surgery. Motte plans to play catch again Monday, April 29, unless he had a setback. "If it's June and I'm not chucking, we need to do something," Motte said.

Fantasy Tip: This is obviously great news for Motte owners, but he's not in the clear yet by any stretch of the imagination. One little setback could make the difference in having to undergo season-ending surgery. Edward Mujica is perfect in four save chances and will likely continue to receive save chances with Motte out. Trevor Rosenthal lurks in the background for saves if Mujica falters.

Cardinals | Jason Motte plays catch Saturday

Sat, 27 Apr 2013 11:38:29 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow) played catch at a distance of approximately 30-40 feet Saturday, April 27, and felt nothing unusual in his right elbow. As a result, the team no longer sees Wednesday, May 1, as a deadline for determining whether or not Motte will need to undergo Tommy John surgery.

Updating previous reports, St. Louis Cardinals CL Jason Motte (elbow) has a low-grade tear in his ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He will rest three weeks, and if he can't begin a throwing program May 1, he'll undergo Tommy John surgery.

Cardinals | Jason Motte has ligament tear

Tue, 09 Apr 2013 17:27:17 -0700

An MRI on the elbow of St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow) showed a ligament tear. The team will give him until May 1 to show improvement. If he doesn't improve, he is likely to have Tommy John surgery.

Fantasy Tip: With Motte sidelined, and Mitchell Boggs likely already off the board, it's a good idea to nab Trevor Rosenthal if he is available.

Cardinals | Jason Motte feeling better

Mon, 08 Apr 2013 11:54:59 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (forearm) said he was feeling better Monday, April 8, but there is still no timetable for his return. He will have his arm re-evaluated Tuesday, April 9.

Fantasy Tip: Hopefully we'll have a better idea on his timetable tomorrow. Until then, sit tight and stash him on your bench. Mitchell Boggs is probably owned in all leagues at this point, but Trevor Rosenthal is a good pickup in the event Motte will be out long term.
