St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow), who's on a faster than expected track to return from Tommy Johnson surgery, will face hitters in a batting practice scenario on Friday, March 14, for the first time, according to pitching coach Derek Lilliquist. He could be the eighth-inning man sometime in April.
Fantasy Tip: The Cards don't expect to have Motte on opening day, and it's really ambitious to think that he'd be reliable in setup work soon after his return. Sometime after the break is much more rational. Motte's 2014 status has a greater effect on the fantasy value of Carlos Martinez, who's vying for a rotation spot, than he does his own.

St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday, March 10, at his greatest level of intensity yet. He's close to clearance to face hitters in batting practice. The club hasn't ruled out the possibility that he'll pitch in a spring game if he hits all their checkpoints before they head north. Those include at least two BP sessions. The organization may opt to keep him out of major league exhibitions so that they can backdate a disabled list stint, if desired. He could still appear in minor league games. Once Motte faces hitters, it's expected that the Cardinals will have a better idea of how long he'll be sidelined.
Fantasy Tip: St. Louis is in no rush to get Motte back. He likely won't be a serious factor in the first half. It's possible that he receives save chances by the end of the season, but for the most part, Motte is off the 2014 fantasy radar.

St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow), who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, said it would be a "push" to be ready for opening day. He is currently 9 1/2 months removed from the procedure, and 10 months is usually the target time for a reliever coming off this type of surgery. However, he had a setback before camp that caused his schedule to be delayed a bit. "His plan can be re-evaluated based on how he's progressing with what he's doing now," pitching coach Derek Lilliquist said. "If we stay with the plan that is place now, he's behind, absolutely."

Tue, 25 Feb 2014 06:44:05 -0800
St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow) has a good chance to be part of the bullpen on Opening Day.
Fantasy Tip: Motte's value is pretty light, considering Trevor Rosenthal will begin the season as the closer. Motte made a leap from 8.34 K/9 to 10.75 K/9 in 2012 before the elbow injury. However, many pitchers returning from Tommy John surgery have trouble harnessing their control. Since Motte throws mostly fastballs, he could have trouble with WHIP and ERA early on. Motte serves as a solid middle reliever in the back fourth of your draft.
