Rockies | Closer-by-committee approach for Rockies?

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 15:10:07 -0800

Colorado Rockies RPs Jake McGee, Jason Motte, Chad Qualls and Adam Ottavino (elbow) are all candidates to pitch in the ninth inning, according to bullpen coach Darren Holmes. Holmes noted the bullpen will focus on retiring hitters at critical times and not predetermined roles.

Fantasy Tip: Bullpen by committees are a hassle for fantasy owners, and given the home venue in this discussion, the fantasy value is low for all four arms in the majority of leagues. However, it is also Friday, Feb. 5, so a lot can change before the season starts, and a full-time closer could emerge at some point. For the time being, though, proceed with caution when approaching this bullpen. Ottavino has the lowest value because he'll be for the majority of the first half of the season following Tommy John surgery last year.

Rockies | Two relievers headed to Colorado

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 06:33:30 -0800

Free-agent RP Jason Motte (Cubs) and Chad Qualls (Astros) reached two-year deals with the Colorado Rockies Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Both righties could figure into the closing mix. Neither has the electric stuff to give fantasy owners confidence in taking a Rockies closer early, but both are worth consideration for a flyer as a high-end third reliever.

Cubs | Jason Motte throws Sunday

Sun, 11 Oct 2015 11:16:15 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Jason Motte (shoulder) threw a simulated game at Wrigley Field Sunday, Oct. 11. He could be added to the team's postseason roster if the Cubs advance to the NLCS.

Fantasy Tip: Motte has been sidelined by a strained right shoulder for nearly two months. He went 8-1 with six saves and a 3.91 ERA in 57 appearances during the regular season.

Cubs | Jason Motte lands on DL

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 08:45:58 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Jason Motte (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, Aug. 24, with a right shoulder strain.

Fantasy Tip: Hector Rondon has been seeing most save chances anyway and should be the unquestioned guy for now.

Cubs | Jason Motte blows save Friday

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 19:39:30 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Jason Motte suffered his first blown save of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies Friday, July 24. He allowed one run on two hits over one inning of work.

Fantasy Tip: Motte had converted his first six save opportunities since assuming the closing job in Chicago. His job is safe for now but repeated ninth-inning collapses could lead to Rafael Soriano or another internal candidate receiving an opportunity to close games.

Cubs | Jason Motte earns save Wednesday

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 19:08:09 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Jason Motte earned his sixth save in as many opportunities against the Cincinnati Reds in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday, July 22. He struck out two batters and allowed one hit in one scoreless inning of work.

Fantasy Tip: It was only Motte's third save of the month, although he has pitched well enough where he shouldn't be in danger of losing the ninth-inning job anytime soon. He is 7-1 with a 2.63 ERA through 43 games this season.

Cubs | Jason Motte the closer

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 07:14:58 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Jason Motte is the Cubs' closer.

Fantasy Tip: Motte has just two saves this month, and his 5.97 K/9 is the lowest of his career. However, he needs to be owned in most leagues where saves are prevalent.

Cubs | Jason Motte earns another save

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 09:43:54 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Jason Motte earned his second save of the season over the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday, June 22, but he allowed a run on two hits (one home run) in an inning of work. Both RPs Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon pitched scoreless innings before Motte was used.

Fantasy Tip: Joe Maddon is clearly going with a closer-by-committee right now that includes Rondon, Motte and Strop, and you should consider them fantasy-relevant in that order. Rafael Soriano's presence on the major league roster after the All-Star break could further complicate the picture.

Cubs | Pedro Strop was unavailable Sunday

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 10:15:55 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Pedro Strop, who secured the save over the Washington Nationals Saturday, June 6, was unavailable to pitch in a save situation Sunday, June 7, so RP Jason Motte recorded the save. RP Hector Rondon has temporarily been removed from the closer role by manager Joe Maddon, and he pitched the "less stressful" eighth inning Sunday. "I'll just wait till that day," said Maddon, who more than once employed a closer-by-committee approach while managing in Tampa Bay. "I'm not opposed to that method, either." Motte said he's comfortable pitching in any role, and after a year removed from Tommy John surgery, he's throwing harder than ever before.

Fantasy Tip: Closer-by-committees are always hard to judge for fantasy owners trying to nail down saves. Rondon should be kept in all leagues, since Maddon seems open to handing the job back to him. However, both Strop and Motte deserve attention from those scrounging for saves in all formats, too, with Strop probably more deserving as your first target.

Cubs | Hector Rondon out of closer role

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 07:57:10 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon is no longer the team's designated closer as manager Joe Maddon said the last three innings were no longer defined. RPs Pedro Strop and Jason Motte recorded saves over the weekend.

Fantasy Tip: If Rondon is being given a breather, Strop has better stuff than Motte. Motte has never regained the upper-90's gas he had before Tommy John surgery and is hittable. Pick up Strop if you're save speculating.
