Miami Marlins INF Greg Dobbs started at first base Sunday, April 8, against the Cincinnati Reds, with C Brett Hayes starting behind the plate. Manager Ozzie Guillen said Dobbs' appearance in the lineup had nothing to do with the slow start of 1B Gaby Sanchez, who has collected one hit in his first 11 at-bats (.091). "I have to give him some at bats," Guillen said of Dobbs. "I cannot leave a guy on the bench for a couple of weeks and expect him to get a hit from the bench."

Florida Marlins C John Baker (elbow) said Friday, Sept. 16, that he is available behind the plate if needed. Manager Jack McKeon didn't rule out using him for a few innings at some point during the final 12 games. "I'm available, hoping to play, ready to play, but I understand (C John Buck) and (C Brett Hayes) have been here the whole year," Baker said.

Florida Marlins IF Donnie Murphy and 3B Greg Dobbs both had their contracts selected from the minor leagues Wednesday, March 30, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro. Murphy will start at third base on Opening Day. Dobbs will be accompanied on the bench by IF Wes Helms, IF Emilio Bonifacio, OF Brett Hayes and OF Scott Cousins.
