Marlins | Martin Prado back in lineup

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 15:37:35 -0700

Miami Marlins 3B Martin Prado (personal) is back in the lineup at third base and batting second Tuesday, April 26, against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw.

Fantasy Tip: Prado just came off paternity leave, and he's about to be greeted in his return by the best pitcher in the world today. It's not a situation owners should explore in daily games, but he's worth getting back in there for weekly formats. In the process, this also shuts down Derek Dietrich's value for now.

Marlins | Martin Prado back, Jarred Cosart optioned

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 13:41:29 -0700

Miami Marlins 3B Martin Prado was reinstated from the paternity list Tuesday, April 26, and SP Jarred Cosart was optioned to Class AAA New Orleans in a corresponding move. SP Justin Nicolino could make the start Wednesday, April 27, after going 2-2 with a 3.60 ERA for New Orleans. Cosart was 0-1 with a 7.89 ERA in three starts, and he walked 15 in 14 2/3 frames with eight strikeouts. Cosart mentioned he wasn't happy with his mechanics and didn't "feel natural" with his lower hand placement.

Fantasy Tip: Return Prado to your starting lineups wherever you own him. Cosart can likely be dropped wherever he's owned, as he's no sure bet to rejoin the rotation anytime soon. Unlike Cosart, Nicolino has great control, but that's really where the intrigue ends. He could be a short-term stream option in the right matchups in the deeper and daily leagues.

Marlins | Martin Prado on paternity leave

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 06:17:31 -0700

Miami Marlins 3B Martin Prado was placed on the paternity leave list Saturday, April 23.

Fantasy Tip: Prado is off to a nice start with a .340/.382/.420 slash line, but he is nothing more than a low-end option in deep mixed leagues. Expect Derek Dietrich to see extra at-bats while Prado is away from the team, and there could be some sneaky upside for Dietrich in daily contests.

Marlins | Martin Prado takes a seat

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 15:34:33 -0700

Miami Marlins 3B Martin Prado is not in the starting lineup Friday, April 22. OF Derek Dietrich is at the hot corner and is hitting seventh against San Francisco Giants SP Jeff Samardzija. Also, C J.T. Realmuto is moved up to the No. 2 spot in the batting order.

Fantasy Tip: The left-handed utility player in Dietrich has some surprising pop for his size, and 20 of his 25 home runs in his career have come against right-handers. The Shark has been hurt by the long ball in the past year and change, so this is a matchup that could favor Dietrich for those digging deeper in daily leagues. Realmuto (9-for-44, .205) may get things going with a move up the order, but he's a risky proposition.

Marlins | Marcell Ozuna, Martin Prado resting

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 11:58:24 -0700

Miami Marlins OF Marcell Ozuna and 3B Martin Prado are not in the starting lineup Wednesday, April 20. OF Ichiro Suzuki is starting in center field and hitting second, while OF Derek Dietrich is starting at the hot corner and is batting sixth against Washington Nationals SP Joe Ross.

Fantasy Tip: Suzuki is a legend but has fallen off considerably and has very little daily or fantasy upside for that matter. Dietrich has surprising power (10 homers in 250 at-bats last year) and excels against righties, so he may work out as a cheap deep sleeper in daily formats.

Marlins | J.T. Realmuto, Martin Prado out

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 11:54:28 -0700

Miami Marlins C J.T. Realmuto and 3B Martin Prado are not in the starting lineup Tuesday, April 12. OF Derek Dietrich is starting at the hot corner and hitting sixth, while C Jeff Mathis is behind the plate and is batting eighth against New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard.

Fantasy Tip: Syndergaard was downright dominant in his first start against the reigning World Series champions in the Royals, so neither Dietrich nor Mathis are attractive at all for daily formats.

Marlins | Multi-hit games for several Fish

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 23:03:00 -0700

Miami Marlins 1B/3B Chris Johnson, 3B Martin Prado and OF Christian Yelich each had two-hit games Monday, April 11, against the New York Mets. Gordon had an RBI and a stolen base, while Yelich drove in a pair. Johnson picked up his first double of the season and he had two runs scored.

Fantasy Tip: It was a hit parade for the Marlins, who finished with 15 hits. Prado and Yelich are solid options in NL-only play and some mixed format. Johnson is more of an option in deeper NL-only leagues.

Marlins | Justin Bour or Martin Prado could bat fifth

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 17:19:02 -0700

Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly is uncertain whether 1B Justin Bour or 3B Martin Prado will serve as the No. 5 hitter in the lineup behind OF Giancarlo Stanton. The lefty-hitting Bour has more power than the righty-hitting Prado, although Mattingly is concerned that opposing managers would bring situational lefties into the game during the later innings after pitching around Stanton. This would then force Mattingly to use a pinch hitter or require Bour to face a left-handed reliever.

Fantasy Tip: Bour only hit .221 in 68 at-bats versus left-handed pitching in 2015 and the possibility exists that he could platoon with INF Chris Johnson at first base if his struggles with southpaws continue. Bour should be viewed as a decent source of power for the later rounds of drafts in mixed fantasy leagues while Prado is a low-end option at third base who is capable of posting a respectable batting average but unspectacular numbers in most of the other offensive categories.

Astros | No ligament damage for Jarred Cosart

Fri, 04 Mar 2016 13:08:52 -0800

Updating a previous story, Houston Astros SP Jarred Cosart (knee) is expected to be fine after colliding with 3B Martin Prado on a play at third base on Friday, March 4. Cosart left to have his right knee checked out by a trainer in the clubhouse and was later diagnosed with a bruise and sore calf.

Fantasy Tip: Cosart is a 25-year-old former top prospect for the Houston Astros that produced a 2.39 ERA in 10 starts following his 2014 trade to Miami before going 2-5 with a 4.52 ERA in 14 appearances (13 starts) with the Marlins last season. He is a candidate for a bounce-back season and should win a spot in the back end of Miami's rotation, but not someone owners need to have on their roster to begin 2016.

Yankees | Ben Zobrist, Martin Prado interest NYY

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 13:05:22 -0800

Free-agent 2B Ben Zobrist (Royals) and Miami Marlins 3B Martin Prado are of interest to the New York Yankees, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Middle infield was an area of weakness for the Yankees last season, and adding a veteran presence to the middle of the diamond and lineup would be a significant boost to their team. Still, Zobrist or Prado shouldn't be confused with heavy lifters in fantasy terms. Both are capable of returning a respectable batting average while chipping in across the counting stats. However, neither are contributors in the stolen base column.
