Texas Rangers RP Alexi Ogando (elbow) received good news from Dr. James Andrews on his elbow issue. Andrews confirmed a diagnosis of elbow inflammation, but no structural damage. Ogando will rest for three weeks before getting examined again. If that exam goes well, Ogando could start a throwing program.

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington is adamant that RP Joakim Soria remains as the team's closer, but RP Alexi Ogando could see some opportunities to close games out in the ninth in save situations. Washington noted that Soria's command hasn't been that sharp of late, as the closer threw 29 pitches Friday, April 11. Washington has been impressed with Ogando this past week. "We've given him three or four opportunities to close games over his time here and he's closed all of them," Washington said. "We'll just have to wait and see. I'm not anointing him my closer when I've got Soria, but he will get some chance to close some games."
Fantasy Tip: Don't confuse this with closer controversy. Instead, consider Ogando the primary saves handcuff to Soria in the event the incumbent is injured or continues to struggle with his control. Ogando should be snatched up in all AL-only leagues, at least.

Texas Rangers RP Joakim Soria will pitch in the ninth if a save situation arises Monday, April 14. RP Alexi Ogando recorded the save Sunday, April 13, because Soria had pitched in the two games prior. Washington said Ogando will receive chances to close, but Soria remains the team's closer.
Fantasy Tip: Ogando presumably will get chances to record saves when Soria is unavailable due to heavy workloads. That doesn't mean you should run out to the waiver wire to grab Ogando, unless he's available in your AL-only league. If Soria is injured, however, Ogando figures to be next in line.

The Texas Rangers have seen progress in RP Alexi Ogando while pitching out of the bullpen. The team's goal is to get Ogando back to being a power arm that stays in the lower portion of the strike zone, and they want him to get more of a downward angle on his pitches. Ogando was averaging just 93.5 mph with his fastball during his outing Sunday, April 6, when he hit 97 mph as a reliever back in 2012. "You'd always like to see more, but it's a process," general manager Jon Daniels said. "He hasn't been as effective as we think he can be. When he first came up, he was a combination of stuff and command. He had a power arm and was down in the zone. We'd like to get him back there. It's very early, but he hasn't shown that so far." Ogando said his velocity is slowing improving.
