Rangers | Alexi Ogando could see save opps

Mon, 14 Apr 2014 16:08:01 -0700

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington is adamant that RP Joakim Soria remains as the team's closer, but RP Alexi Ogando could see some opportunities to close games out in the ninth in save situations. Washington noted that Soria's command hasn't been that sharp of late, as the closer threw 29 pitches Friday, April 11. Washington has been impressed with Ogando this past week. "We've given him three or four opportunities to close games over his time here and he's closed all of them," Washington said. "We'll just have to wait and see. I'm not anointing him my closer when I've got Soria, but he will get some chance to close some games."

Fantasy Tip: Don't confuse this with closer controversy. Instead, consider Ogando the primary saves handcuff to Soria in the event the incumbent is injured or continues to struggle with his control. Ogando should be snatched up in all AL-only leagues, at least.

Rangers | Joakim Soria available for save

Mon, 14 Apr 2014 14:01:45 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Joakim Soria will pitch in the ninth if a save situation arises Monday, April 14. RP Alexi Ogando recorded the save Sunday, April 13, because Soria had pitched in the two games prior. Washington said Ogando will receive chances to close, but Soria remains the team's closer.

Fantasy Tip: Ogando presumably will get chances to record saves when Soria is unavailable due to heavy workloads. That doesn't mean you should run out to the waiver wire to grab Ogando, unless he's available in your AL-only league. If Soria is injured, however, Ogando figures to be next in line.

Rangers | Progress for Alexi Ogando

Mon, 07 Apr 2014 15:10:05 -0700

The Texas Rangers have seen progress in RP Alexi Ogando while pitching out of the bullpen. The team's goal is to get Ogando back to being a power arm that stays in the lower portion of the strike zone, and they want him to get more of a downward angle on his pitches. Ogando was averaging just 93.5 mph with his fastball during his outing Sunday, April 6, when he hit 97 mph as a reliever back in 2012. "You'd always like to see more, but it's a process," general manager Jon Daniels said. "He hasn't been as effective as we think he can be. When he first came up, he was a combination of stuff and command. He had a power arm and was down in the zone. We'd like to get him back there. It's very early, but he hasn't shown that so far." Ogando said his velocity is slowing improving.

Rangers | Five bullpen jobs spoken for

Wed, 26 Mar 2014 19:00:36 -0700

The Texas Rangers are starting to finalize their bullpen. RPs Joakim Soria will serve as the closer, with RPs Neal Cotts, Pedro Figueroa, Jason Frasor and Alexi Ogando joining him. That leaves two spots open, and Ps Ryan Feierabend, Michael Kirkman, Daniel McCutchen, Seth Rosin and Shawn Tolleson battling down to the end of camp.

Rangers | Alexi Ogando to begin in bullpen

Wed, 26 Mar 2014 18:55:38 -0700

Texas Rangers P Alexi Ogando was hopeful of opening the season in the starting rotation, but the team decided they were better off with Ogando working in the bullpen. "I'd like to start, but it's not my decision," Ogando said Wednesday, March 26.

Fantasy Tip: If you had plans on using Ogando in AL-only fantasy leagues, he has little value as long as he is working in middle relief or a setup role in most formats.

Rangers | Daniel McCutchen brought up

Tue, 25 Mar 2014 20:18:31 -0700

The Texas Rangers have brought P Daniel McCutchen up to the big league camp Tuesday, March 25, with a chance to make the team as a middle reliever. He is in camp because the team has moved Ps Tanner Scheppers and Robbie Ross to the rotation, and they might have P Alexi Ogando there as well if SP Yu Darvish (neck) starts on the 15-day disabled list.

Rangers | Joakim Soria named closer

Sat, 22 Mar 2014 11:54:48 -0700

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington announced that RP Joakim Soria will be the team's closer.

Fantasy Tip: Tanner Scheppers and Neftali Feliz were among the other candidates for the job, but Scheppers was named as the team's No. 3 starter Saturday, while Feliz will continue to battle for one of the final three spots in the bullpen. Soria should be picked up in all leagues if he's available, while RP Alexi Ogando is likely to earn saves on days when Soria is unavailable to close. Feliz can be dropped for now, until his velocity returns and he proves that he can regain his old form.

Rangers | Alexi Ogando to pitch in relief

Sat, 22 Mar 2014 11:48:46 -0700

Texas Rangers P Alexi Ogando will be used primarily as a setup reliever this season, although he may be called upon to record an occasional save. He was under consideration for a spot in the starting rotation but lost the competition to P Tanner Scheppers after posting a 6.35 ERA in the Cactus League, with opposing hitters batting .377 against him.
